In the 30+ years that I have used Jobo equipment, I have never used any cleaner other than hot water. I have never had a problem.

That said, I can say that Thymol in water is a good disinfectant if you think you need one, and has no bad effects on film, but it must be removed thoroughly or it can leave a residue on the reels or tanks. It is gone when the odor is gone.
