Dear photographers,

this is the invitation for the fifth round of Alt & Lith Print Exchange (ALPX).

If you are new to the ALPX: Please read the FAQ ( https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/introduction-to-the-lith-and-alt-print-exchange.164971/ ) before you subscribe. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to PM me.

If you are interested in the type of prints we exchange, you can find some exciting and spectacular samples in the following thread:

https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/alt-lith-print-exchange-3-alpx-3-status-and-updates.171030/

If you want to sign up, PM me your full real name and your complete mailing address, including the country. Please use the subject: "ALPX5 Signup". I still have the addresses from the previolus ALPX, so if you gave an address last round you may subscribe simply by answering here.

After the last round was affected by Corona, I hope we can come back to our usual four month cycle. That means:
Signup: August 2020
Print and Send: September and October 2020
Rest and Relaxation: November 2020

Please remember, if you have not fulfilled your obligations for one of the previous other print exchanges, try to complete these before signing up here.

On a side note: piu58 has made some research on shipping fees from the US to the rest of the world, which can be found here: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/blind-print-exchange-round-32-bpx32-sign-up-thread.167804/

Two questions...

1) How many folks typically participate? In other words how many prints are we expected to send out?

2) I'm thinking of participating with cyanotypes, but I'm wondering if hand-colored black and white inkjet prints would be acceptable? (I note the mention in the FAQ that inkjet prints are not allowed, but hand coloring adds a "wrinkle" to that, thus my question.)

Thanks.

Hi Frank, To answer your questions.
1. There could be a great many, or as few as 2 in the exchange, but you only have to send a print (or prints) to one other person so postage anywhere on the globe is manageable.
2. Cyanotype is good. Inkjet is not so good. Basically we try to hone our skills in the "wet" darkroom and share our best/proudest prints with others.

Hope this helps you.

Andy,

Thanks for the response. I'm a tyro when it come to print exchanges... now I think I have a handle on the difference between a blind print exchange and a "plain" print exchange such as this.

I'll participate with a cyanotype made from a digital negative if that is OK. I'll send the requisite PM now.

Thanks again.

Sorry for not responding earlier, now my vacation is over and I can take care of things again.

This Exchange works as a "chain" - i.e. everbody sends out at least one print - or more if you like.
Hand-Colored BW inkjet prints? Yes, I think so. We are not APUG any more, this is photrio. And the final result is unique and handmade, so I´d say it´s good.

Sorry, I did not see your previous answer before answering to Frank.

From my point of view, a hand-coloured inkjet print is a unique hand crafted picture, based on a photographic process. So I would accept it. The "Alt" portion includes a lo of different processes, most of which use digital negatives these days. So a contact copy from a digital negative (although made in a wet process) can have a strong digital component, like contrast adjustment.

On the other side, I do see you argument that was have always made the exchange based on a wet Darkroom process.

What do you think about the following:

If a participant wants to send a hand-coloured inkjet print, please inform so. If any participant does not want to receive a hand-coloured inkjet print, please also state so. I will arrange the exchange accordingly.
Can we agree on that?
