Allentown, PA Photo-Ops

HI! I am flying out to Philadelphia in September to shoot a wedding outside of Allentown, PA and would love to hear your suggestions on your favorite places for photo-ops in and around Allentown, PA.

*Also, if you have any favorite places to eat near the Hamilton area I'd really appreciate hearing it!

Go southeast into adjacent Bucks County. Plenty of covered bridges, old farmhouses and the Delaware River. Doylestown is about thirty miles south and there is the Mercer Museum, which is filled with artifacts from the late 19th century. Across the street is the old Bucks County Prison which was converted to the James Mitchener Art Museum. There is also the Moravian Tile Works. A bit further south is Washingtons' Crossing and the Revolutionary War Museum. Around forty miles northwest is Stroudsberg home to Steam Town, which is one of the largest collections of steam locomotives and rail equipment on the east coast.

Also, check out the Allentown visitors page. They have converted some of the old steel mills to make them more visitor friendly. Can't help you with dining, it's been eight years since I've been back to visit.

If you;d like to see the countryside and visit five covered bridges bearby along the way try this tour. It's 14 miles complete out of Allentown.

Were you referring to Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton?

Wondered about that! There is an operating tourist railroad in Strasburg, out just east of Lancaster in the Amish Pennsylvania "Dutch" country. And there is Steamtown up in Scranton, either is a fair amount of travel from Allentown.

As an aficionado of Olde Rust, I can suggest just down the Lehigh River from Allentown is Bethlehem, the former headquarters of the thusly named steel company. Parts of the grounds are now a performance space, and there is The National Museum of Industrial History in one of the old buildings. All in the shadow of the blast furnaces which have been preserved.

Out in Lancaster County, just across the road from the aforementioned Strasburg Railroad is the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania which has quite a collection of locomotives and other equipment.

A relatively short distance north of Allentown, the town of Port Clinton is the headquarters of the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern which is an operating short line with 400 miles of former Reading RR tracks. They operate a fair number of weekend excursions, some with steam power.

There are lots of historic sites throughout Pennsylvania, and lots of scenic views.

I haven't been in the area in a long time (grew up in Quakertown) but parts of the old Bethlehem steel plant could be photogenic in an old industrial kind of way.
