All these adapters for EOS -- none for FD??

I'd always understood that one of the interesting attributes of the Canon FD-compatible bodies is that the flange-to-film distance is generally shorter than most other SLR systems, so adding a lens mount adapter to use non-Canon lens should be easy.

I see all these auction site adapters for sale to adapter everything under the sun to Canon EOS mount, but almost nothing to Canon FD. I know nothing of EOS mounts -- are they the same in a general sense as FD, or are they really different?

Is anyone aware of a broad range of lens mount adapters for use on, say, a Canon FTb or my Canon T90. I can live with stop-down metering, if only I can get some exotic lens to work -- specifically, Rollei SL2000/3000 lenses.

If you can get an M42 adapter for the lens you want to use, it's easy to find M42-FD adapters.

Easy to get a M42 to fd adaptor (got a genuine Canon one for £4), no probs with my AV1, T70, T90...nice to have a more modern camera and play with old screw lenses.
But I have also Zenit EM and Practica MTL3 picked up for £3 ea at a boot sale, these save the bother of remembering to stop the lens down before taking a pic as they work on auto. It's worth remembering, for general photography, you wont see any difference in print from a MTL3 compared to T90 using the same screw lens (well I haven't).

There is some discussion of adapting the Zeiss/Rollie lenses to Canon in this thread.

Well, there is adapter for mounting FD lenses to EOS cameras, so...

The FD and EOS mounts are quite different. EOS lenses use electronic coupling to stop down the aperture, focus, and otherwise transmit information between the lens and the camera body. There are mechanical lenses that can be used on EOS cameras, like Tamron Adaptall lenses with the rare EOS mount, but only in full manual mode with stopped down metering. I think the new Zeiss lenses will be electronically coupled, though they are manual lenses, so I think they should have focus confirmation on EOS bodies.

Anyway, Canon made other adapters for the FD mount, for Exacta, M39 (Leica Thread Mount), and Nikon F mount. The M39 isn't hard to find, but the Exacta and Nikon adapters aren't too common.

Just an added point:- while say pentax and Helios are easy to use on FD/M42...I've just got a Meyer Oreston 50mm F1.8 and it's damn awkward to use on FD/M42 as you have to press a thingy on the side of the lens to stop down, with one finger........... and at the same time operate the shutter with another (finger).

Canon's " A " & " B " Adapters

I'm not sure that the Canon Adapter " A ", ( FD camera - LTM 39 lens ), or the " B ", ( LTM 39 body - FD lens ) for that matter, are not meant to shoot at infinity.
I think that they're meant to be used with an enlarging lens & bellows.
