Agfachrome AP-41 formulae published?

Hi folks,

Does anyone know if the formulae for the old Agfa AP-41 process have ever been published?

I'm aware that they might be similar to the Orwo 9165 process which is public.

The reason that I am asking is that I have some Agfachrome films which might be in good condition, and the AP-41 kits to process them.

However, the colour developer looks like it is trash so I will need to make up a new solution.

Any help greatly appreciated!

There was an official Orwo Formulae Book published in hardback in English, which was very comprehensive and covered all the various B&W and color processes. I got my copy from Ebay a few years ago, but unfortunately it is in storage right now and not accessable.

(I think that a problem now might be sourcing the specialist colour developing agent.)

That would be 'Orwo Rezepte', I've got a copy (in German, would love an English version too!!) and luckily I also have some CD1 colour developer so making the solutions will be easy.

The trouble is... are the Agfachome solutions the same as the Orwochrom ones?

There were many Orwo colour processes.
There were different Agfa-West processes too.

Color processing is different from that of B&W. C-41 films can be developed in any C-41 chemicals. You always use the same time and temperature for all. They are designed for commercial processing. Just make sure the films say C-41 process on the package. If not you are out of luck.

This is NOT about C-41.

Agfa was one of the last manufacturers to switch to oil-embedded couplers.
This thread is still about processing films with directly-embedded couplers.

Oil-embedding was one way for Kodak to evade Agfa technology.

I guess I should have narrowed it down. Was the latest formula for AP41 published? I'm looking at film that expired in the early 80s.

I have the formula for Orwo 9165. It might be equivalent; I doubt it's the older Orwo 9160 process.

Even before the final splitting of the two Agfas in 1964 they had gone different ways.

The Kodak method was the path needed to travel to develop multi-layer coating technology with slides and curtains. Agfa was unable to do this with the "embedded" < your word, Fischer couplers.

Was thrown off by the use of "41" in both names. The last Afga films were C-41. Agfa termed the C-41 process AP-70. Sorry but still rather confusing.

Yes, one is lead into the wrong direction due to the similarity of designations.
The C-41 equivalant Agfa process was AP70 (now ASP70).

I have home the book of Orwo Formulae from ~ 1984-1985.
From what I remember, ORWO color processes (negative, positive and reversible color) use TSS.
Through 2000, when I was working at the Laboratory Mogosoaia (cine) TSS that I still had in stock by ~ 1990 shows all too bad (oxidized).
Make sure you find (you) TSS used to have a hope of a reasonable result.
ORWO 9165 process will give it to you.

George, thank you for posting the relevantOrwo 9165 pages. I have the equivalents in German (from my 1983 book) but I've never seen these in English, and there are severa good hints as to processing which I can now try.

The CD-1 (TSS) that I have is new (few months, kept in sealed dark glass bottles) so hopefully should be OK - it was last time I used it!

I want to prepare the formula (AP-41) or (AP-44)
I don’t have the second formula while the first one is available.
I don’t have developer (T-32) while I have (CD.2 & 3 & 4) and I don’t know which one is closer to developer (T-32)?
- I read some articles that talk about the process (AP-44) is the same process (AP-41) with the exception of a single variable development only, which is the process of reversing a bath in the chemical way and going directly to the color developer without rinsing, as well as adding a solution (pre Bleach) and go straight to bleach without rinsing,
In fact, this information caused me confusion and confusion.
Can you help me in this matter
