I the slides film Agfa Scala still available? If not, is there some similar film (B&W slides)?

Foma make a reversal film & processing kit. Some people here use it but it doesn't get good reviews or reports. You can reversal process most B&W films yourself and there are a number of formula in the Articles section here on APUG (welcome by the way).

And of course there is the APUG sponsor DR5. They can do the reversal process on most B&W films. I really like their warm tone #2 developer.

As Ian said, there are a number of options. You can process your own (recipies here on APUG), or you can use DR5.

I use DR5 for all my B+W work (see portfolio link below for examples), mostly Ilford Delta 100 and SFX, and am very happy with the options dr5 gives me and the quality of service they offer. Here's a link to all the films they reverse-process:

Hope this helps,
Gavin

..thanks for the kudos Gavin..

The scoop on Scala film;

Scala film is no longer made. All that is left of the film is what Agfa rolled before they shut their plant down, or about 4 years ago. Regardless of the expire date, the freshest Scala film is 4 years old.

As mentioned, the FOMAr film is a very good reversal film. It has a unique look. FomaR can only be a reversal film however. It can not be processed as a negative.

I presume this is a different Alessandro.

Almost any B&W film can be reverse processed. The quality will depend on the process you choose. Reversal processing is a precise procedure and not all recipes are created equal.

Alessandro,

Maco offers an Agfa Scala 200X as type 135 and 120, each in 5 films packages. Exp. Date 2010

Furthermore there is that text on the net on reversal processing:

Jens Osbahr
A Black&White Reversal Process
In Memory Of Agfa Scala 200x

where a formula and times are given for the reversal development of several current BW-films.

ummmm.. this is not a correct assumption. The last scala film was made almost 4 years ago. IT IS the same film rolled 4 years ago. DO NOT let this marketing ploy fool you. AGX, you should know better, shame on you....

So your saying they repackaged the film with and untrue Expiration Date? I have 2 135 5 packs both with and EXP of 6/2010

Actually we now have got two contrary statements: The one by dr5chrome and me quoting(!) a Maco statement from their online shop.

Yes, I'm aware that there is faking behind some company statements. And I assume other members are critical too. However neglecting all statements would not make life easier neither.

One explanation of this contradiction could be, that some lot of Scala had been freshly frozen (as masterroll or somewhat converted) and then be warmed up again and packaged and given an expiry date based on the date of warming up.
However, the photos of the packages Maco presents show Agfa packages. This could either mean that Agfa is back in business (either with frozen or fresh film), though I wonder whether they would legally be entitled to do so with Scala film. Or that these packages are complete `old´ Agfa packages with a second expiry date. Or that Maco presents old photos but sells these films under the AgfaPhoto brand.

I answered a question of a fellow member. I added that expiry date so to enable anybody to make his own conclusion.
I can't look behind closed doors and thus don't know when a certain film was coated on what line. As indicated the situation could be quite complicated.
Thus I don't think I should be ashamed...

Maco stated last week in a German forum that their Scala films are still from the Agfa days:

Type 135 exp. 2009

Type 120 exp. July 2008

All refrigerated.

(At their webshop however they offer Scala expiring June 2010… )

I have 2 5 roll 135 packs and it says June 2010 also on the box.

Dear Sirs
My name is Alessandro Franchini. I'm the responsible of ars-imago.ch distributor of the Rollei products
in Switzerland. Therefore i am a partner of the company Maco.
I do not like to hide my identity. So you know with whom you are talking
and writing to.

I would like to clear some statements in this thread.

First of all Maco Photo Products never stated that they are the manufacturer or re-packer of the Agfa Scala films. The only true topic is that Maco bought all the available stock of the Scala medium format in Germany. That's why you can buy Agfa Scala 120 Films in Germany only by macodirect.de or by the partners of Maco. The 135-36 Scala in Pro packs (5 films) can be bought anywhere from anyone.

The expiration dates of the films are NOT FAKED and they are published by Maco on their macodirect.de shop:
Agfa SCALA 200, 135-36 Exp. 06.2010
Agfa SCALA 200 120 Exp. 07.2008

Just another thing about Maco/Rollei stated as "marketing ploy". I guess we all should be glad about the commitment of this company to classic photography products. No other company worldwide did something nearly comparable in the last years.

Best regards

Alessandro, thank you for the clarification. Too often we fall into the trap of thinking all the manufacturers are the "big, bad guys trying to take our money" when that is not true.

In the film world today we are very often dealing with much smaller companies than we realize. It is easy to forget that a "multi-million dollar" company is not necessarily a large company, and within the film world all the manufacturers are trying to deal with a shrinking market.

I personally thank you and Maco for the commitment to traditional film. I need companies like you just as much as you need customers like me. Together we survive; separate we wither.

WRONG

Hello sir,

We are very familiar with the agfa films and when they were manufactured. We process much of the remaining scala film to a higher standard. That being said, it is deceptive to put an expire date of 2010 on a film that was manufactured in 2004 & 2005. Call it what you like, i call it deceptive and i am calling your bluff.

Where did we get this information? ..the horses mouth.

The fact is that we (MACO and MACO Partner) do not print the expire date on the boxes. We are the wrong place and people to fight with. All the rollfilms we bought have an expire date in 2008. If you know exactly when the films were manufactured you should tell us exactly the right expire date of these films. But please document your information. There are too many people out there who state things without any fundamentals.

Best regards

I’m not to decide what’s right and what’s wrong.

However, much of this discussion is due to the information policy of Maco as I stated in an another thread.
Which makes any statement/catalogue information to be considered doubtful.

And now even ends in one member accusing others. This is sad and the worst case to happen in a forum like this.

I won’t discuss this further.

Alessandro,

thank you for the valuable information. If you know the history of our family names, you will see that maybe we were ONE family... I suspect that we came from France, and you?

There is a thread on Kodachrome where Photo Engineer explained why films from the same master roll might have different expiry dates and emulsion numbers, e.g. packing for different markets.

I've bought in-date Agfachrome and Agfa B&W 100 ASA earlier this year on Ebay, with the packing by Lupus Imaging....I assumed that they had bought the remaining stock coated by Agfa before the latter finished production?

Presumably they, and Maco, etc., test the stock and the Expiry Dates can be taken as reliable, whenever it was actually coated?
