Agfa Duoscan SCSI Card

Does anyone use this scanner with a SCSI card? I'm trying to get it to work via my USB port with a SCSI to USB adapter but my computer won't recognize it. So in any case I ordered a used SCSI card and was just wondering if the the external port on the card is male or female so that I won't have to get another piece of equipment at the last minute. Thanks for any help!

It should work with any Adaptec SCSI card of recent vintage. I have a Duoscan 1200 and a Duoscan running on two different machines with two different Adaptec cards.

I wouldn't trust any kind of SCSI/USB or SCSI/parallel converter to work consistently.

As to the kind of connector you'll need, that depends on the card. The scanner has a 50-pin Centronics port and a DB25 port. The SCSI card could have either of those or a compact 50-pin connection or a compact 68-pin connection, if it's a relatively new Type III card. External SCSI ports are always female, and the cables are always male at both ends, if I'm not mistaken.

Also, I hope you made sure the card works with your computer. Most new computers have only PCI slots, but older SCSI cards could require an ISA slot.

Thanks for the info. I finally got it to work with the SCSI to USB adapter, but now I'm getting an unknown scanner error when I try to make a scan in Fotolook 3.6. I'm not sure if Fotolook has all the drivers for the scanner or if they are somewhere else on the net. I went to the agfa site and all it provided was the FotoLook software. Everytime Windows 2000 loads I get a Found New Hardware diglog box, but I have no drivers that I know of to install. Anything I'm doing wrong or missing? Also, the Scsi card I got was a PCI one, and the external connector is a female HD-50 port. So I'll have to get another converter to change HD-50 to either DB25 or CB50. See this is why I gave up on digital....UGGGH!!

Fotolook contains the drivers for all the Agfa scanners, so you can get another Agfa scanner and plug it in and it should work, if you find a good deal. You should install Fotolook first, and then Windows will look for a driver (tell it to look on your hard drive), and will find something like agfablahblah.inf in the c:\windows\inf directory, and then you should be good to go.

You can get a cable that is HD-50 on one end and DB25 at the other end. Try pcconnection.com. As a general rule, get the shortest cable that will work. Long SCSI cables or a long chain of SCSI devices can invite magnetic interference and transmission errors.
