Agfa Back?

The film production in Leverkusen will be resumed under the direction of AgfaPhoto Managing Director Wilfried Sill: “Just as Hyosung, we consider the market for films with special technical attributes as a growth market. We will immediately resume our film production in a rented building. Initially, we will recruit 50 employees from the employment and qualification company and commence our services as a film supplier to the existing customers of AgfaPhoto GmbH.“ The workforce is expected to grow to 70 by the end of the financial year.

Great news if it is true!

It is true but it does not mean what you think it means. The "film production" here refers to the production of base materials, i.e. the film that the emulsion is coated on. It does not mean the production of photographic film.

It is still important news, because other manufacturers use this material to make their photographic film.

Cellulose triacetate film is a major product of Fujifilm as well. Triacetate film has very good optical quality, if made correctly, and it is used between the light source and LCD layer in LCD monitors. Vast majority of these films are currently supplied by Fuji Photo Film. It may be that AGFA wants to break in to this market.

By volume, much of cellulose triacetate film is made from acetic acid. Film manufacturers which have internal acetic acid plant, and very close connection with cellulose suppliers have a huge cost advantage in this business.

Incidentally, if you look what Fuji does, they look for all sorts of applications and volume users for chemicals and products used in manufacturing of photographic film, paper, chemicals, and they sell a lot of these to make up for the shrinking film business.

Oh no! Not MORE good news from the analog photography front! Nothing like a little positivity to ruin an otherwise wretched holiday weekend!
