I put together yet another page about Packard shutters. This time, how I added sync to a front mounted shutter for my Green Monster. You can see and read the whole story here.

Bob,
I have been very successful using a long arm extended micro switch hot glued to the top inside of the shutter body. (Just behind the brass boss that the pin goes from the front of the shutter and into.) Very much like the first photo you show except mounted on the shutter. My switch is mounted so the the piston trips the micro switch at the wide open point of the shutter when the p[iston is at it's highest. The thin brass extended arm of the micro switch closes the contacts with out a hitch. The arm is lifted straight up by the piston allowing no side drag and simply drops back down into the air chamber. I have not worked out how to use the pin for completeing the circuit when focusing, I simply un plug the the two pole cord to focus and pray I don"t forget to re plug the cord. I have another to do in a day or two, A #8 with two pistons. If I am again successful I will try to photograph it and post it. I don't have one of those electronic wonder cameras, so will have to do it with film.

I really appreciate you sharing you findings with us.
