It's available all the time and a fine developer but it's nice to be able to help a small company like Adox in the hope they will continue to make it.

Another one to try if you like one-shot developers is FX-39 II (also from Adox). I've been very impressed - it also has some compensating effect, is sharp, but has just a bit less grain than Rodinal. It is not as economical as Rodinal though.

I had Ilfosol-3 die in 3 months, wasn’t very impressed with it in the first place. If you like it you have to use it fast.

It's hard to beat Rodinal for shelf life that's for sure. I have used Ilfosol-3 and the new FX-39II. Of the two, fx-39II had better shelf life. I use butane to help preserve the developer. I got the FX-39II on-line and it was probable fresher than the Ilfosol-3 that might have sat on the shelf longer in the store I bought it at. Don't know? Another developer that is easy to make and last as long as Rodinal is Kalogen. I don't use it much since I'm stuck on Pyrocat HDC and Xtol-R (now XT-3), but Ido use it for a quick film test on a newly acquired or fixed camera I have worked on. It delivers honest grain similar to Ilfosol-3

This was my experience as well. Great sharpness though.

I’m tempted to get a bottle of Rodinal. I used it in the past with great success with Neopan 400 (RIP) and FP4. I mainly shoot HP5 now and my past experiences with HP5 and Rodinal were not great. Anyone know how the FX-39II works with HP5? Every few years I wonder out and try a new developer and always come back to ID-11 1:1. Easy, keeps well, decent film speed and sharpness.

I used lfosol-3 in the Simplicity Packs to develop some Konica infrared film, it worked great. I’ve thought about getting more but the shelf life of Rodinal trumps it. I don’t think I would use all the Ilfosol before it went bad.

Like most film/developer combinations, HP5+ in Rodinal works better for some subjects than for others. For example, I find it to be excellent for photos of machinery or architectural closeups, and not very good for landscapes.

Thanks to this thread, I currently have two different versions of the developer that used to be known as Agfa Rodinal: (1) Rollei R09 One Shot, and (2) Adox Rodinal. They're both fresh. I bought the Rollei in July 2022 and Adox in October 2022. I ran a rough test using a 40 minute semi-stand development (1+100) with Arista Edu Ultra 100 in 120 size (also fresh). I agitate continuously for the first minute, then let it stand in a water bath for 20 minutes, then two inversions, then 20 minutes stand (41 minutes total time in developer). Stop, fix, and wash normally - all at 20C.

Why semi-stand? No reason other than I've done some of it in the past and I liked the results. Arista Edu Ultra 100 seems to respond to this type of processing well, with even development, low B+F, respectably small grain, good detail, lovely tonality, decent film speed, and, importantly, repeatable results.

Are the two versions of Rodinal identical? I have no idea! All I can say is that, in this particular test, they perform similarly. Why no actual photograph? I have no way to scan film at the moment, other than with my phone, which gives terrible results. Sorry about that!

I didn't like FX-39 II for HP5+... And it is wonderful with TMX and TMY, for tone, grain, and sharpness.
What you said has been exactly my experience: always back to MQ developers as they're a great balance for HP5+. Only for soft contrast scenes I find HC-110 better, but HC-110 can't do some things ID-11/D-76 do, like the grain structure D-76 gives us for portraits when we use stock solution.

Re: longevity of Ilfosol 3. The bottle is only 500ml which makes 5L of working solution. That's about 20 rolls for most people. For moderate-to-high volume of shooting the 3 months lifespan of a concentrate will be sufficient.

But for those who don't shoot much B&W or prefer to use multiple developers for different films, 3 months may not be enough. What you do in that case is pour Ilfosol 3 concentrate into a 1L wine pouch immediately after opening and squeeze all air out. I am guilty of not measuring this, but I have never had Ilfosol 3 go bad on me after switching to this storage method. If I were to guess, it lasts 6 months before I use it all. It is a mystery why don't they package it this way straight out of a factory.

The other top-2 is either D76 or HC110/Ilfotec-HC. Therefore this makes ilfosol-3 top-1 and spot number Two is varying.

Is Ilfords Ilfotec HC pretty much the same as kodaks HC-110? Seems so expensive though. I’ve used HC-110 in the past with HP5 and do remember liking it. I wouldn’t mind trying it again but Kodak was having issues with it.

Ilfotec-hc costs 72$ for 32 Liters of working (1:31) solution, which is roughly 11$ per 5 liter solution, and it lasts forever while in syrup form (undiluted).

Ilfosol-3 costs 15$ for a bottle which makes 5 Liters.

Ilfoted-hc is 25% cheaper than ilfosol. As a matter of fact, Ilfotec-hc is the cheapest Ilford developer per milliter of working solution.

Thank you for this clarification. This puts it on par with ID-11 in price. I might have to give it a try again.

ID-11 costs roughly 20$ For a 5L pack
