Adelaide Hills.

If any South Aussies see this I will be in the Adelaide Hills for about four weeks from the middle of June. Also going to Kangaroo Island for a few days, but we are house sitting in Adelaide for that period. Just wondering if the locals could steer me towards a good location or two.
It won't be a strictly photo trip as I'm going with the First Lady, however I should be able to sneak out for the odd day.

Have a good time with First Lady . Dont go in to botanic garden with allergy sensivity , it causes lots of trouble. If wine free , you are goinng to best place in the world , dont drive after wine , take a taxi.

Thanks Hoffy.Mustafa knows more about Australia than I do....hang my head in shame Must go to Turkey one day, big year this year for Aussies in Turkey with the 100 year of Gallipoli.
I'm arriving in Adelaide I think about June the 18th, and staying for three weeks. We are house and pet sitting so I can't stray too far....have to walk the dogs!
Thinking mainly of landscapes, old buildings etc. I will be doing Digi colour but probably just take my Fuji GW680 for B&W.

My goodness, Mustafa must be a clairvoyant, Bridgewater is just down the road from Hahndorf.

Hahndorf by the way is quite photographic, but sort of touristy these days, nice bread though. I think the literal translation from German is Hahn = Hen or Rooster, Dorf = village. So it is or was, a Chook Village, to put it into our vernacular.

From Bridgewater, go towards the city, at Crafers turn north. There's the Mount Lofty botanic gardens, very picturesque (mostly in autumn with colour film, but still good most of the year).

Keep going north from there to piccadilly, some of my favourite spots are there. First shot is from Gores Road looking East, next is Swamp rd looking west. Also, (there was a url link here which no longer exists) lot of ruins is on Swamp rd.

(anyone from the recent print swap might recognise this, it's a lot better on the print with burned in sky than the scan).

Or go south from Stirling to find Scott Creek conservation park, an old silver mine with native ground orchids if flowers are your thing (I can never remember what time of the year they flower though).
Or northeast of bridgewater for half an hour and get to Lobethal. Nice town in itself, but a bit north of that is Lobethal Bushland park, one of the last remaining bits of completely untouched scrub from 200+ years ago.

And don't forget to eat at the Bridgewater Mill (if you can afford it).

I was just thinking that, could be an excuse for an AFDUG meetup? (seeing as we're not special enough in ourselves to warrant meeting up, we need outside motivation).
My last exam is June 29th, then pick my mum up from the airport that night. But after then until July 27th I'm free every day, unless I get offered a job (translation: I'm free every day).

So... I grew up in the Adelaide Hills, Oakbank. Bridgewater is pretty nice, especially in June (it will be green) as long as it's not raining. Have a wander around the Bridgewater Mill, but it won't take long. Don't go to Hahndorf, it's a hellhole tourist trap.

Before making suggestions about where to go, I have to ask: what do you want to see? I mean, there's no shortage of rolling green this time of year, but it's all pretty samey and easy to find. Do you want ruins? Cliffs? Orchards and vines? Train tunnels? Fresh post-bushfire growth?

I could possibly get to a meetup if it's a weekend, but finding time is pretty hard right now. I barely get time to take photos as it is with a baby & toddler on hand. Mind you, having someone over here would make a good excuse!

Hi Polyglot. Tourist traps make me allergic Rugged bush, old buildings or ruins sound good...we have plenty of green rolling hills here of course.Will keep in touch re a meetup and of course, a group effort would suit too. Still be nice to have some local knowledge, and even if the photography 'aint great, always nice to see some like minded folks.

Well you're not going to find much rugged bush in the hills because it's generally very agricultural. There are a few pockets of national parks, but you'll basically want to go down to Deep Creek Conservation Park or something to find a big expanse of rugged bush. Maybe on the way to/from KI? Since you have a few weeks, have a wander through the Barossa and/or Mclaren Vale, they're both really nice this time of year plus there's wine.

Make sure you have a drive up and/or down Gorge Rd between Athelstone and Cudlee Creek.

Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens are very pretty in a manicured way.

Ruins are a bit harder to find. I've got a friend who has a map of cool stuff (points in google maps) but 95% of it requires a spot of trespass; I can dig it up if you want. For easily-accessible, try Newmans Nursery Ruins in Anstey Hill (requires a good walk), and Morialta Barns near Norton Summit. It's also worth walking up through Morialta Conservation Park.
