Adding Sodium Carbonate to Dupont ND-3

Would it be feasible to add sodium carbonate to some Dupont ND-3 that I have mixed up?

I'm looking to increase the activity of the developer. Would this help at all? Maybe borax? Help?

From my limited research, it appears that PPD is more active and produces finer grain in a solution of higher pH. Is this correct?


I've attached the formula that I used to mix the ND-3.

If you add sodium carbonate to ND-3 then it would no longer be ND-3 would it. Its characteristics would be different. BTW, PPD is by its nature a slow working developer and its presence in developers of this kind is for its silver halide solvency and not for its developing characteristics. In addition PPD can cause dichroic fog with modern emulsions. My recommendation would be to use a modern developer like Xtol which produces fine grain.
