I assume your camera works fine without a lens on at all, right? You can fire it, change shutter speed etc, obviousyl P/A modes won't work but Manual and T (shutter priority) should work.
Some of the EOS cameras have a little switch that gets pushed by the mount of the lens once locked in, which then makes the camera expect a chipped lens. See here

You can file down the adapter a bit on the correct location and you should be ok. It only takes a tiny amount, I had to do that with a leitax adapter for the 1V and it worked fine after that.
The alternative is to buy an adapter with a chip, they are easy to find. You'll get focus confirmation too with that. If you intend to use the lenses a lot the cost is reasonable.
