Actual length of a 25' double 8 roll

All,
I have and use an old keystone K-22 8mm movie camera. The counter is set up for the standard run of 25' per side. It also has a counting buffer at the beginning and end of the 0 and 25' marks. My question is: what is the total length of the film? The reason I ask is that I'm considering buying some Fomapan B & W film but it is listed as 33' instead of 25.


Is a standard 8 roll actually 33' long or do I need to make some adjustments in setting my film counter to compensate for a longer roll of film?

that is fairly close that gives you a 4 foot leader and trailer on each end, which would normally be discarded by the lab. In the old days the labs cut the leader off before processing, although these days I am sure many of them wait and just cut off the fogged film at the ends.

The 25' Kodachrome II roll came out of the can as 25' of 16mm film (with twice as many perfs). There was no leader at all (the leader was added after processing). This is why your movie would have light-struck segments: when you first threaded the film into the camera, the film being struck by light at that moment will appear as light struck segments at both the beginning and end of your movie. At the mid-roll flip, the film being struck by light at that moment appears as the light struck segment in the middle of your movie. Obviously, you have to splice these out. However, the unexposed film came with no leader - at least K II didn't.

As for your 33' Foma, that gives you an extra 8' when loading it into the camera. After the film is split, you'll have an extra 8' at the beginning and at the end.

Sorry Theo Sulphate. the leader and trailer were discarded before processing leaving the 25 ft of 16mm which was slit and spliced to give the 50 ft return reel. if loaded carefully, all the fogged film was on the discarded portion. 33 ft is the correct length for a 25ft active area. In 16mm you have the same issue, a 400ft roll on core with no leader will cut down to 3 100ft daylight spools with leader and trailer.

The labs did splice on a short length of "white leader" , often smaped with "processed by (name of lab)"

You are correct. I am sorry for the misleading information. The last time I used K II was in 1978 and my memory has obviously gone bad.
