I have a bad habit of blowing dust off negatives and spitting on them, requiring me to rewash. I've done this twice recently and not washed the negatives quickly enough, resulting in damaged spots of the emulsion.
Is it something I ate?

Saliva contains enzymes to digest food, gelatin being an easily digested one.

For it to cause damage so fast, say no longer than 5 minutes surprises me, but I've rarely left it that long to see the consequences. Several glasses of water rather than wine in future.

See my post in the enlarging forum about just this called "DISGUST WITH DUST NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED". Saliva eliminated. - David Lyga
