Hi! This is my first time on a photography forum, but I had an accident during a gloomy dark day in the car when in the middle of the car trip I accidently opened my p&s and barely opened it like no more than an inch and closed in the same moment I opened it. It was on my fifth shot, and once I closed the camera it automatically rewinded as the Olympus zoom af 230 feature is to do such a thing. Now I'm wondering if I'm a victim of how many shots I completely lost.... If I posted in the wrong category I apologize, I'm still new to this. Thanks!!!!

Probably only two or three. Finish the roll and have it processed. You normally are only charged for photographs that can be printed.

Welcome to APUG Photrio!!

My math says that if you were on your 5th shot when the camera rewound the film, then you lost the 2 or 3 frames from opening the back. But you will also have 19 or 31 blank frames depending on if you have 24 or 36 exposure film in there. According to the manual, the camera wound the film back into the canister, so unless the op has a way to get the film back out........

Okay, I just ruined a couple of shots but I can clarify that it did not in fact go back into the canister after opening the camera with it off so it wouldn't rewind again for the SECOND time. So hopefully I will still have majority of my shots left and that everything goes well, because realistically I'm not too bummed out because I'm just trying to clarify and see if this camera works or not before reconsidering my purchase. Thank you for your effort in going through even the manual I really appreciate it!

Some P&S cameras wind the film all the way out onto the takeup spool and then wind it back into the cassette as each frame is exposed, a safety measure of sorts so only unexposed film would be ruined by the back being opened, the Ricoh GR1 for example. If your Olympus is like that you will have saved the shots you took but not the unexposed film.

Already in the 70s such was applied, as with the Agfa Optima Sensor range.
And even earlier with the Karat or Rapid cassette system.

My Agfa Optimas do not wind the film all the way out. They have a semi-protective cover for the exposed film that means you only partially ruin it if you accidentally open the back...

All of us do this at least once. Some many more times than once. You would be surprised how many of us are repeat offenders.

I stand corrected. I mixed up the take up reel being covered with the film being first taken up completely on a uncoverdd reel, which has been referred to here.
