As some of my APUG friends know, I'm visiting the US this year and would love to hear your recommendations for an:

1) Absolute Must-Do Workshop (apart from my own & others at Foto-3 ) and...
2) Absolute Must-Visit Exhibition in USA

in June 2008.

Any suggestions?

I think that the Intro to Large Format workshop with J Brunner is a good one...

This is a guide to photography galleries, mostly in New York, but I think they have listings in other areas as well. They may not have the June listings just yet.

I haven't seen any promising big photography shows at any larger museums. The Met in New York will be having some kind of retrospective of photographs made from about 1960 on.

There's a great show right now in my neck of the woods at the DeCordova Museum that you would love, but I don't think it's traveling anywhere. The book is available on Amazon.http://www.decordova.org/decordova/exhibit/exhibit.html

I'm not sure I will pursue wet plate beyond the workshop, but I want to give it the old college try, and I can't wait to get my kids fixed to a plate!

Oh... and I almost forgot... I will be having the MUST SEE show of the season at my local public library here in the lovely New England hamlet of Groton with an opening on Saturday June 26th!!

Whilst in Toronto see if you can't get across the lake to Rochester and see the George Eastman House. I don't know what your interested in, but since you'll be in Michigan and Toronto I'd see about printing lessons from Bob Carnie @ elevator, split printing and street shooting with Les and pt/pd with bill schwab. About the same time you'll be in the area Bill and Joe Smigiel are giving a wet plate workshop in the beautiful woods of northern lower michigan.

If you come east, then George Eastman House in Rochester has probably one of the finest collections of cameras and photographs and Mark Osterman and France Scully Osterman live here and give workshops on just about all of the old alternate photography methods at home. You can even join us for one of our semi regular lunches if I can schedule one for your visit. I might even be pursuaded to show you how to make and coat an emulsion.

I met Mark Osterman when traveling to the GEH when my wife was doing some research. He is a great guy and unbelievably knowledgeable.

Nicole, The US is a pretty big country, it would help if you told us how much time you plan to stay and what cities or regions you plan to, or would like to visit. Given the cost of and inconvenience of flying that far it might pay to make your US trip a long one.

ER, I agree. I'm open to any location to see what's interesting, but I think I'll stick with Foto-3 and Elevator which seem to have pretty much everything and more than enough for me on this visit.
I'll be in Colorado 2-9th June for the Foto-3 workshops, seminars and conference.
Have portraiture assignments in Paris, France 10th - 16th June and then
will be in Toronto at Elevator between 17th-22nd June.
After that I was thinking of sticking around a few more days before heading home, if there's something else worth visiting - and I'm not too homesick by that stage.

There are a couple of exhibitions at the Getty that are scheduled for that timeframe if you're going through LA. One is the Becher's exhibit of architecture, and another exhibit goes over painterly approaches to photography.

Well you can always go Fishing with Laura up North,,, catch a few bass, she will filet and you gals can have a good fish fry.

You can get to Rochester by train, car or plane and the trip can take you right by Niagara Falls, you can stop at the Chautauqua Institution and catch an opera, a symphony or a play. The list goes on when you put a small detour into a trip to Toronto.

The train trip takes about 6 hours and costs less than $50 each way. The air flight is about 1 hour. You may wish to take a look at www.ciweb.org. This is the Chautauqua Institute and is a cultural center in the US and has been for over 100 years. You will see the home of Thomas Edison, the Packards, the Heinz family and other notables from the US and the famous Athanaeum hotel which has been host to many notables including presidents. The latest was Clinton. The president to visit was U. S. Grant. Chautauqua gives you a view of the US from about 100 years ago. For the most part, automobiles are banned on the grounds except for invalids and arriving or departing guests. You might enjoy this.

Toronto is a short flight from NYC. NYC has probably more photo galleries and photo museums than anywhere else. You could take in ICP, classes there too, MOMA, B&H photo, etc. It would make for a nice weekend stop. NYC is a destination town for other reasons as well, there are few cities in the world like it.

Yes NYC is almost obligatory if you can swing it. At the current exchange you might even save moeny if you got there and shop.

As JD has related, I'm team-teaching a wetplate collodion workshop with Bill Schwab in Northern Michigan June 23-24. We'd love to have you there if you have any interest in that process. The workshop immediately precedes the free annual Photographer's Gathering that Bill is hosting from June 25-29 at his homestead in Cross Village a few km from Lake Michigan and the Straits of Mackinaw. There are some nice locations to photograph around the area and it is a summer destination for a lot of folks. Many of the APUGgers from the midwest US will migrate there for the week to photograph and tell tall tales around the campfire. Should be a blast as it has been in the past.

Bill's Northlight Photographic Workshops webpage has info about the wetplate workshop and the gathering. The itinerary for the gathering isn't fixed as yet, but tentative plans include a day trip to Mackinaw Island. There should also be some interesting demonstrations and presentations by attendees as in past years.

I believe Northwest and United Airlines serve the Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) which is a few km down the road from Bill's place via connecting flights from Toronto to Detroit. It would be about a 7 1/2-hour drive from Toronto (770 km).

I think you would enjoy the week. Talk to Bill about it at Foto3.

NYC would be great! I'd rather go there with my DH though. Next time.

Bob, I try and avoid stepping on ants. I'd be no good at killing fish. But the company would be great!
