Screws play a huge part in camera and the repairing process. Anyone interested in this area?

I try to keep the original screws ( brass/copper) as much as possible, but for those rusted or heavily worn I would replace them with modern precision screws or the mechanic screws.

Where do you source screws? And can you say a bit about measurement? To order a replacement you need to specify diameter and threading. Have you found that threading is fairly standard, or do some companies make their own screws and custom threads?

I have found hard to source screws at industrial hardware stores. Sourcing small machine screws such as the JIS type are still hard to locate. Work bench practices such as putting all small parts in glass bowls or jars helps prevent loss of those parts.

Locally I have hardware stores that is specialized in screws. But the problem is I have to order in 1- pound pack, which is >100 pieces. For long screws I would I cut with saw or cutter for a short fitting (and that has risks!) Unfortunately many of them are wasted since they got rusted in long storage.

Sometimes computer hardware stores might also have some screws , likely with flat top as well.

The best place is still from ebay /Amazon JP. I have seen some camera tools seller on ebay selling at very high price in the screws. 😒

JIS screws is another one that makes me headache, so as the JIS screwdrivers. It is rare unless using Amazon Jp

Common Phillips screwdriver might strip JIS screws.

I get the screws I need from abandoned cameras of the same type.

It is ideal if the screw you are looking for is still in its original location so that it can be easily found. Otherwise, a puzzle game begins with magnifying glasses and tweezers.
