AA's The Camera, The Negative & The Print

Just re-reading the above series and am realizing how much I forgot as I strayed away for a while.

If restricting myself to only B&W, 35mm and medium format, does his other series Basic Techniques of Photography Books 1 & 2 add much?

In answer, the Basic Techniques is basically a compressed and easier read of the series you already have.

These books were not written by Ansel, but are a reiteration by John Schaeffer. Most of the information is very good, but there are points of delineation which can lead to errors.

Just curious because I have never had to read them as I have later editions of Ansel's series. Could you give an example or two of these errors? I appreciate it.

I think the Basic techniques pair are much more general. Think college level textbook rather than each volume dedicated to a particular subject.

Yeah, I only glanced through them once at B&N a few years ago and it just seemed like a rehashing of the inforamtion I already possessed. I was just curious as to what info in the books might lead to errors as Jim suggested.

In fact, the earlier additions have more esoteric information in them...I found this out when I purchased my circa 1980's versions with the better design, layout, and photo's....I guess they were 'modernized' with Ansel's then current darkroom techiques. BTW, I have a signed copy of "Camera and Lens" ....quite cherished I might add!

I purchased the 1980's version pretty much as they were published, and had the earlier versions of "The Negative" and "The Print" as well as a signed copy of "Camera and Lens", and discovered that some of the esoteric stuff had been left out in the modern versions....I recommend buying the older editions in addition to the modern(edited by John Schaeffer) versions if you can afford to! Reading the 1980's forward editions made many things clearer in those thin, early versions....
