hi, all, I’m not exactly sure where to put this, but I thought I would share it with you guys. Over the past few days I’ve been working on a list of Kodak specification numbers (SP numbers). You can find these numbers on Kodak film boxes (bulk rolls mostly), and often times they will tell you some information about how the film was finished.

As far as I know, there is not a list of the specification numbers all in one place. Most of the specification numbers I have listed can be found online, however, you have to know where to look. I have included all the SP numbers in the 2013 motion picture catalog, the aerial film spec sheet, and some microfilm data sheets.

I also put a few on there that I have encountered online or in person, however some of these entries are not complete, as stuff like the perforation type and core/spool can’t be seen on most online listings.

I know of two people who have bought bulk rolls of color film that they thought were perforated, however, they were not. This specification number would tell you if it was perforated or not, and could save folks some trouble.

This is by no means all of the specification numbers that Kodak has, I know for a fact that there are plenty more that I hav’t found. Feel free to let me know in the comments if you have a new one.

Thanks for posting. Back in the day EK must have had a terrific record keeping organization.

No kidding! So far the list is 138 long, that means there very well could be 862 left! I was kind of hoping by doing this I’d see some sort of pattern in the numbers, but honestly I really don’t… maybe someone else could enlighten me.

That’s different, these are the type of film, not the specification numbers. But good job on the list!

This information *might* be in the 2nd edition of Bob Shanebrook's book "Making Kodak Film".
He posts here as "laser" so you might ask him directly.

Most of the job is not mine. I will place credits, when I find it's source (again).
These tables can be merged, adding more data to each record (like CAT number i.e.)

I do actually have that book, he does list film numbers in the back, but no SP numbers.

Unfortunately, these numbers aren’t really related in any meaningful way. They’re two separate systems, one denotes the film type, and one denotes how the film is finished. Many different films can be finished with the same specification number, and one single film can be finished in a variety of SP numbers.

I have updated this list, I’m not sure how to edit the initial post to put it there though. I found a Kodak catalog from 2003 that had several more numbers that I had previously not found, as well as some eBay listings that had some interesting formats (like SP 410, which is a bulk roll for making 5 36 exposure rolls that has the leaders pre-cut).

I've deleted the first list and added a note to post #1 accordingly.
