A V500 and 35mm question please

Good day.
I just went back to 35mm film. I have the Epson V500 that I use for my Med Format neg's and I'm happy with it.

When scanning 35mm's with this scanner, I see that you can put two rows of 35mm negs in the tray. When it scans, how do you seperate the indv. images for export?

I have an older Epson with the same sort of 35mm scanning set-up. On mine, the software produces a pre-scan with all the negs showing. You get the opportunity to check, or un-check a box with each to say whether you want any particular neg. scanned as final.

After the scanning is complete, each neg appears as a thumbnail with an opportunity to rename the file. Once done, you can save them all to a folder as individual files.

On mine, I found the software a bit clunky, hope it's improved by now.

Tom, when you say you are happy with this scanner, does that embrace 35mm scans too ? The reason I ask is that I am in the market for a scanner and am not too sure if a flatbed scanner will be up to the mark.

Tom,

You don't say which software you are using for the scans as they each have their own approach. If you are using the Epson software you get the option bobwysiwyg mentioned. I seem to remember Silverfast allowing me to select each frame individually before moving on to select the next but its been a while since I used it (won't work with Vista 64).

As for your question Roy. I have a V700 which makes an OK job of 35mm B&W but isn't too good with slide film (esp Velvia). The lens is also quite soft and it doesn't pull the detail out of the shadows very well either (hence the 35mm negs scan better than slide). So guess it depends on what you want to do with the scans. If you are looking for exhibition quality prints at A3 or larger I suggest buying a good dedicated film scanner rather than a flatbed.

I am using the embedded Epson s/w.
Roy, Yes, I scan 35mm with very, above acceptable results.

So, when using multiable neg's it does in fact see each one indiv.

If by chance I'm scanning all 10 negs that are visible, I usually go for coffee while it is scanning.. maybe two cups.

I can scan 3 120's color with Ice at a time, highest rez and it takes the 3 to be done in 7 min flat.
i'm very, very happy with it.
(it's subjective as compared to a Nikon 9000 which I can't even come close to) I'll do two strips of 35mm this afternoon and post my findings if anyone cares.

Just scanned 10 35mm neg's and after preview the Scan Process quoted 8 min as was done in 6.5 with ICE
I'm again, very pleased with the 200 dlr scanner

My V500 seems faster than my destroyed 4490 (before its glass base caved in). I would recommend the betterscanning.com 35mm ANR glass insert. It slips into the Espon holder and does a better job of holding film flat. Well worth the $40 or so it costs shipped, here in the U.S.
