In our Loblaws grocery store I found 4 litre brown bottle of wine vinegar(Unico brand) a perfect chemical storage container. I just wanted to ask if I have to neutralize vinegar or it is enough to flush it with plain water?

Why not just purchase new amber bottles and forego the worrying about cleaning the jug?

Greg,

Do not threw away an usefull thing!

The safest way to go is, once the botle is rinced with water, is to rince it again with the product you want to store in it. For instance, if you want to store developer, just fill up the botlle with some old dev. ( and water to fill till the neck) and leave it overnight, then flush and rince again.
Do not forget to do the same with the cap.

Rinsing with water will get out everything that is not glass, IMO. Vinegar is about 5% acetic acid, which is very soluble in water. No worries.

At this point why not dilute the vinegar with 2-3 parts of water and use it for stopbath?

Exacty, My brother in law graduated from R.I.T. in photography and worked at the photo lab there while in school. They used plain vinegar from the store for their stop, but I don't know how the wine aspect of it would affect the negs..maybe a secret new stainig process!! Or just make good vinaigrette and ingest it!!. The vinegar in the bottles is probably cheaper than bottles form the lab supply..Evan Clarke

I wouldn't worry about a thing. Buy the vinegar, use it for salad dressing or whatever and save the bottle. And yes, it's probably cheaper to buy the vinegar in a bottle than to buy bottles froma lab supply house. But mind the caps. Very often these bottles have metal caps and they don't seal very well. If they are lined with plastic and you use it to store stop bath or fixer, you'll probably be ok. Developers are another story. They'll keep much better in smaller, completely full bottles.

Bottles

I tend to be a little obsessive and have the chemicals to make every developer formula I have encountered..I use a lot of bottles. Here in Milwaukee, we have American Science and Surplus and they normally have cheap prices on good lab bottles 500ml-. I found this place: http://www.plasticbottlestogo.com/index.asp and today bought 108 32 oz hdpe bottles with plastic screwtop lids for $108.00 delivered. Everybody doesn't use this quantity of bottles but at these prices you can let some lie around until you need them. Some of the lab supply places get $3.00 for 4 oz. amber bottles and that makes me crazy because somewhere there must be tons of surplus, unwanted bottles!! ..Evan Clarke

Thanks every one who replied. For $10 bucks I had a lot of salads made and a bottle for chemicals to boot. Great deal. The lid is out of plastic with seal insert.
