I thought my Paterson tank of 1984 was old until I read this thread. I routinely wrap the tank to dislodge air bubbles and the tank is still going strong.
I have trouble fitting the lid of my Super System 4 tank. Half the time it leaks when inverted. Now I only use the twist stick for agitation. No problems so far but if they do occur, I'll stay with the twist stick and modify my technique as I like having zero leaks.

My tanks, Jobo and Paterson don't leak, but I do burp them. I put the lid on, press the centre of it with my thumb and lift one edge of the lid slightly, until I hear air escaping, then close the lid again.
Try inversion with a tank loaded with empty reels and filled with water, but burp it first. See if you get any leaks. You don't have anything to lose anyway. The only time I used the stick with a Paterson tank, I got an ugly streak.
