If you can find a copy of Limelight by Helen Gee get it. It's a good story of the early days (early 50's) of the photo gallery scene in NYC. Limelight was a coffeeshop/gallery that exhibited photography. I believe it was the first such photo gallery. Lot's of juicy stuff. Robert Frank was a perfect gentleman but the same could not be said for Walker Evans etc. etc.. Helen Gee just recently died but all photographers owe her a debt of gratitude.
