And I too needed that quote lately, an inspiration to trust my instinct in my search for expression that reflects what I feel and see.

Thanks, Cheryl!

I only just noticed that this thread had resurfaced. Funny how the timing works out sometimes. I needed to read this quote again.

I wasn't on APUG when this thread first came up. Sometimes it's good to see an old thread like this one.

Cheryl, thanks for encouraging the youngster. Kids need all the encouragement they can get, especially in art, especially now.

Do you have any idea how she's doing? Still photographing?

Bruce, I never heard from her with the exception of a quick thank-you from her. Hopefully she's doing well. It was hearing about teachers like this that, in part, pushed me into teaching workshops for aspiring / professional photographers. Since then I've taught somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 students in the US, UK, and Canada. It's been very rewarding, if at times overwhelming!

Cheryl, that was a wonderful thing you did, sharing that quote -- not only with the student but also the community here.

Isn't it interesting that you never hear a small child say "I can't draw" or "I'm not good at this"...they just do it, embracing it freely and without second guessing. The lesson of course is that we're all artists until, one day, we let ourselves be convinced that we "can't".
