A/NZ PX Round #3 - How do we want to run it & sign-up?

I found I went through an insane amount of film two with the arrival of my first. You might be surprised at just how much time you can spend in the darkroom, especially with them being younger. My two are now 4 1/2 and 2 1/2 and it is starting to get harder as they both need attention at the same time and never seem to go to bed early enough for me to get a long night in before the sun comes up.

Well we will see you in the next round I am sure.

As soon as we get into a solid routine around here, I should be able to start doing some printing again. My life is currently broken up into tricky intervals of less than 3 hours...

I do hope to jump into the next exchange round though.

That's how I got into photography. Bought a K1000 back in '76 when my first son was born (only camera I could afford). Took lots of slides of both kids when they were young (slides were the cheapest film). Put the camera way until the grandkids arrived. Pulled out the camera, realized I could change lenses, discovered eBay, and I have been hooked since. Switched to Nikon and more recently expanded to 4x5. Of course, grandkids are not my only subjects now

Yeah, kids are definitely photogenic. I'm going to give the 4x5 a go soon before this little one starts moving too quickly!

My thoughts exactly, hence bringing a bigger lighting kit home, if I can pop a couple giant brollies above him and get a speed up above 1/200, I might just manage a decent success rate in LF. Otherwise, I'm much like you, an old rangefinder full of Tri-X, a little Olympus XA in the pram for walks, and a 645 under the kitchen table (where the best light is... above the table anyway...) all 'just in case'...

So far, I've learned that the best times for a nice still bub to pose is right after a feed, when he's looking like a drunk on payday

Here is my first & second 4x5 of my son at about six months. The first he did not smile, but the second was a beauty. The camera was an old Thornton Pickard, and I had to wrap towels around the bellows to cover up the leaks as best I could. As you can see still did not get to cover all of the holes in the bellows

Packages of prints due to me by end of March. Then I will chase the stragglers toward the end of March. Name and shame during the first week of April, and I will distribute the prints I have unless I am aware of circumstances that are slowing the arrival of prints to my address.

My six prints are ready and will be in the mail shortly.

I thought, how difficult can it be to make six prints; but I forgot Murphy's Law (BTW, O'Toole thought Murphy was an optimist!). My first printing session was sabotaged by cross-contaminated trays (community darkroom). Initially I suspected the paper (Ilford Cooltone), but a professional photographer friend of mine said it was contamination, so I went with that. Printing session #2: after thoroughly washing all the tools and printing one "test" print (negative for contamination ), I proceeded to batch process the requisite six prints in pairs. Much to my chagrin, the prints got darker the more I printed! Getting the right exposure became a game of hit-and-miss:confused:. Fast forward to PS#3. Switched to another enlarger (same model: Omega Super Chromega D Dichroic II). Need I say, same results! Between the last two session (and way to many sheets of paper), I think I have six "identical" prints.

P.S. Has the earthquake in Christchurch, NZ affected any of you? From what I have seen in the news, it is devastating to say the least.

It's all marching up rather quick. Out of the 4 weekends in March, I already have two of them booked, so I now only have two weekends to do my prints....yikes.

My prints were in the mail on Friday (and while I was at it, I did my Large Format forum ones as well)! After being consistently one to two days late both previous exchanges, I have lifted my game

Hi Guys

sorry I've gotten pnumonea and have been in bed for the last week...I'm going ot get some prints made this weekend and they will be delivered by the postman on Monday.

I think you will be happy with the results, as the effort involved in making the original was interesting
