prints are rolling in, I'm not keeping track of whose i've received, I'll let everyone know how many prints are outstanding when I get back from camping on Wednesday.

I think this time, I'll PM everyone who has missed the date rather than give everyone a couple of weeks leeway.

yes, camping was a bit on the wet side...

I have 15 sets of prints, which means I'm a few short, hopefully I'll receive these tomorrow assuming they're in the post

If you haven't sent your prints yet, better get them in quick

My prints are printed and are flattening now, they need spotting, but as they are 'late'... they will have to do

I doubt I will be partaking in any future exchanges if we are going to be forced into sending unfinished work.

It should be noted that not everybody has 24/7 or even regular access to a darkroom, I use a community darkroom and get time when it is available.

One months from confirmation of numbers to due date is a bit tight...

That's too bad Trotkiller.
I hope when you get more regular darkroom access you'll be able to participate again in the future.

I have to admit, my initial response to myself was "you knew the dates…..", but I have thought about it and must say that I am being a bit unfair.

I am not sure on how others would feel, but would it be possible to extend future exchanges to be an approximate 3 month cycle? Month 1 being sign up, Month 2 being print and send, the first 3 weeks of month 3 being catch up and then send back during the last week of the 3rd month (of course, if all prints are in, they could be sent earlier)? In reality, this is no different to what ultimately happened with the first exchange. If prints are not received by the absolute latest hard cut-off date, then it would be too bad. This also gives us a chance to have 4 exchanges per year.

Thoughts?

I personally prefer it the way it is. My initial response was also "you knew the dates", and it still is. Sure, it's difficult if you have limited access to a darkroom, so it's a challenge for some, but it's also still pretty clear when the deadline is.

I've got no problem with people who have apologised for being a couple of days late, but for those who did commit and then say that there wasn't enough time, that is a little bit of a cop-out.

Hi all, have just gotten back from a holiday in the sunshine (geeze Melbourne is depressing when you get back!). My prints ended up flying up there with me and getting posted down on Friday of last week, so I hope they made it okay. I forgot to take a big zip-lock bag for them, so ended up using the spare bin liner from our hotel room, hope they survived the weather! Also just realised I forgot to a 'do not bend' sign on, but there is a sturdy piece of card in there, so hopefully it will suffice.

Tim, please let me know if they haven't shown up! I'll gladly take a trip up to personally file a complaint with the Sunshine Coast postmaster

To be honest I think if you commit to the exchange you need to work to the time frame...then again 4 weeks can be a bit tight, depending on the process used. I mean for the last print exchange each of my prints took 25 minutes to expose!

Tim - I think we should set the dates for future print exchanges - and have 5 days to sign up starting the 1st Feb, 1st May, 1st August and 1st November 2011 - with prints due by the 15th of the month.

That way anyone who is interested in joining the print exchange can do their prints beforehand, and sign up when the exchange opens. Then they have just over a week to get their prints to you (or whoever the organiser is....).

If a person doesn't have their prints done in time, and doesn't have the time to get them done by the closing date they needn't sign up, or can withdraw before the deadline for sign up closes.....

We seem to have a fairly stable number of people involved - around 20 or 21, so if you print 12 prints (11 in case there is an extra person in your group - plus 1 for yourself) then you should be covered...and if there are less people in your group you can always save the print for next time.....or give them to someone as a gift..

just a thought......

Andrew, I agree with most of what you say, but I think we need more than five days to sign up, and I think we need to allow people more than a couple of weeks until the middle of the month to complete their prints. I reckon people will mostly not print until they have committed to the exchange. Some, like you, may like to be a bit more organised.

While recognising that it may not be possible, I would be saddened if we were unable to accommodate willing participants who find the timeframes too tight.

Trotkiller raises a valid point regarding his reliance on shared facilities. Moreover, if we are including NZ, we also need to allow time for the vagaries of the international postal service/s. If it allows more members to participate then my preference would be for a 6 or 8 week gap from close of sign-up to due date.

Similarly, if a longer "printing time" means better quality pictures, then I'd rather have a smaller number of exchanges per annum and better quality work.

Just my AUD$0.02 (which is presently worth more than US$0.02! - time to order some more film from Freestyle!)

I would agree, quality over quantity. Imagine if you were the guy in a position where you couldn't present your best work because of time constraints, you'd opt out of the exchanges because you couldn't present something you really felt was worthwhile. We could miss out on seeing some great things. Just a thought.

I'm gonna side with quality here too. I never did get a chance to reprint my work and had to submit stuff I wasnt necissarily happy with - everyone got a note saying they're due another print from me in the future, to make up for it. While everyone knows the deadline and should work towards achieving that, you arent going to coordinate 20 people and not have hiccups. And it doesnt take much for a darkroom session to go pear shaped either, and a lot of people may only have the oppertunity to print once or twice in that one month.
Most exchanges on APUG run on a 3 or 4 month cycle. The postcard exchange has a month each for Signup, Printing, Mailing, and then a month's rest before you do it again.
More time would encourage more participation and a better standard of work, and help to keep the mental health up in between. It IS just a sharing of work amongst friends, after all.

I too would appreciate a bit more time so I could get help of the more experienced in the darkroom. There is no need to run a print exchange like a quick turn around machine. This is all supposed to be fun ?

I prefer a quick turn around me-self. I'm a serial procrastinator anyway, so it doesn't matter how long I get I'll still do it at the last minute.

LET'S SEE THESE PRINTS!
