You are correct. In fact, the same coupler is often used in 2 forms. One is a colored form and the other is colorless. The colored form is destroyed during development to form a negative image of image dye along with the image from the imaging coupler. So, a ballasted 4-chloro phenol could be the imaging dye and a ballasted 4-azo phenyl - phenol would be a reddish yellow masking coupler that formed a negative cyan image identical to the first coupler and a positive reddish yellow mask.
