I've been "one of those people" for well over a decade now. You know the type...a habitual lurker quietly syphoning off knowledge and wisdom from people on these forums.

Well, I'm trying to do better, finally. I officially joined up here at Photrio a couple months ago and will be making a concerted effort to be contribute more to the community when I can.

For those interested, I was a fairly extensive voice in the photo-education community for the better part of the past 10 years, being a staff writer for Digital Photography School and co-founder/head developer at Contrastly.com, as well as being a freelance author and creator/consultant for a host of other websites, entities, and publications. I have hundreds of articles scattered about the corners of the internet. I have, however, broken off from that world to a large extent in the last couple years, becoming what some might consider a sort of photographic anti-hero in many respects.

Photography and it's peripheral madnesses are quite literally my life and have been for close to thirty years now in one capacity or another. I was once a "real" person with a respectable career in healthcare (radiography) for 12 years but left that behind 7 years ago to pursue my writing, photo-work, and general debauchery full time. In October of 2022, I final snapped my twig and decided to sell my house, converted my 4Runner into a camper, and whisked me and my dog (Leia) onto the road to see just what all is out there to photograph as fully committed dirtbags.

My work revolves around a blazing sun that is 99.9% non-digital and historical processes. I shoot primarily medium format film (6x6,6x12), 8x10 large format film, and am currently anxiously awaiting the completion of my first ULF 11x14 camera via Richard Ritter which will likely usher me into the realm of dry and wet plate. Of course, I travel with my scanner but also contact print in silver-gelatin, cyanotype and soon salted paper within my traveling darkroom/bar made from a converted ice fishing hut lovingly named "The Hive."

I'm not sure of the etiquette for sharing links but you can find me in the all the usual greasy places around the web like YouTube, Instagram, Medium, ect., as "Adam Welch Photographist." Additionally, a Google search of my name will likely yield nuggets of deeper information such as my multiple books and other questionable ventures should you be sick enough...I mean...inclined to learn more about me. Honestly, after reading through this little post, I figure you folks officially already know more about me than most people in the world...which is terrifying.

I look forward to being a larger presence within this community which I have learned so much from over the years. Leia and I are happy to be here.

Very cool. And yeah, those guys look like a TDOT road crew* ha

*I am a native born Tennesseean and we all know the road work there is laughable.

What has four wheels, is orange and sleeps six?

Ha! Late to the party- my wife gifted the Dude's sweater to me this past Christmas (yea, it's comfortable while sipping a white Russian), but I never wear it with shorts.

I look forward to seeing your posts as you move through your adventures with Leia, which kinda makes me think of Steinbeck's Travels With Charley.

Welcome! Sounds like you came to the right place. Here is my old off-road ride. It was a lot of fun. I am not as brave as Sirius (I would never have done something like that purposefully).

Hey thanks a lot for the info and the welcome!

Yeah my life has been unusual and I'm not sure it's altogether inspiring or even should be, but it's definitely been one weird ride 🤓

Which one?
Welcome to posting!

Haha thanks, Matt. And yeah I almost said the same thing at first. That was November in the high country above Las Cruces and it was already getting nippy so she was decked out. Also, not shown are Leia's now discarded hiking boots.... 😆

Thanks a lot and always good to meet another Dude or Duder or El Duderino...if you're not into the whole brevity thing....

Also thanks for lobbing up that Steinbeck book because I'd honestly never heard of that one somehow. A few years ago I did a book (completely ripped off Steinbeck in the title) photographing along Route 66 (specifically San Jon, Tucumcari, Kingman) at night and being out there in the dark all alone always had this extreme "Steinbeck/Kerouac" vibe.

Kerobeckian? Steinoucian?

Oh very cool man, and thanks a lot for the welcome!

Completely unrelated, but I noticed on your Flickr it was shot on Tri-X via an X-T2. I assume you digitized the negative with that camera? If so, do you mind if I ask what setting/recipe you used? It looks great.

I basically use auto WB, electronic shutter, 2 second timer to eliminate any vibrations, ISO200, and expose (auto) RAW files on a DURST slide copier with a 75mm enlarger lens (typically set to f8 or f11) tweaked to give me the ability to expose 6x6 cm negs. I use ON1 to invert the image and adjust contrast, plus do any spotting, etc.
