So I've been visiting several photographic exhibitions that are on near or around New Haven. Here's a little blurb about them.

1. Visions of Rock at the Exposure Gallery - Dead Link Removed
As part of a greater American PHOTO and Nikon event last year, images taken by Richard Aaron of the Rolling Stones, Carlos Santana, KISS and others are on display here. Taken in both studio and "on stage" settings, there are some amazing, dynamic images here. Really nostalgic event photography.

2. Yale University Art Gallery - http://artgallery.yale.edu/
I had the pleasure of attending a seminar by Joshua Chuang, Photography Curator of YUAG and hosted by the Photo Arts Collective of New Haven last week. Joshua has studied American photographic art for the past 10+ years (he's like 30 - tops!) and personally selected all the works of American photographers on display as part of the Collecting for a New Century Exhibition. His lecture focused on the linkages between photographers of different eras and of painters of the same era; on the 'lineages' of photographers and their mentors before them/grasshoppers after them; and on photographs as a vehicle for documenting the accepted ethics of the time.

One part of his talk really struck me and that is the image of a postcard stand in New Mexico showing three postcards - one is your typical landscape, the next is an image of the Hoover Dam, and the third is of a mushroom cloud during a nuclear bomb test. Yeah - a postcard of a mushroom cloud .... imagine that!

Joshua also talked about the acquisition of the complete body of work of Robert Adams. http://artgallery.yale.edu/pdf/1.10.05Adams_release.pdf

Unfortunately he ran out of time and we all had to leave the gallery.

3. Preview of the APUG Show at VPC - http://www.valleyphotocenter.com/
I had the pleasure of helping Gene hang and as a result preview some amazing work.

Suzanne's images will just WOW everyone. I just know it. Her image of the kid paddling and blowing bubbles in the pool, taken from an overhead vantage is beautifully printed.

Peter Schrager's prints of his new surroundings in Florida draw you to the area.

You all have to come to the reception if you can. It really is going to be a fantastic show.

4. Spectra 2007 at Small Space Gallery - http://www.newhavenarts.org/programs/smspace.html
Finally, the Photo Arts Collective puts on a yearly exhibition of their work in a show called Spectra. There are some fantastic prints in traditional, digital and combination thereof workflow.

Lots of photographic things to see in New Haven.

I also went to another exhibition at the Northern exposure Gallery in Kent, CT (which is way the heck in the boonies), but this show was all digital prints, so I won't post any comments here about it.

Regards, Art.

Art, when you come north again for the opening, you should continue up the road a bit to Hallmark in Turners Falls MA and VCP in Brattleboro. Hallmark is remodeling though, I'm not sure if they'll be open, come to think of it.
There is also Nimoy's show in Northhampton.
