It just showed up. Immediately took off my FLE and threw it into the trash (now there is the FLE II, the old one is worthless) and put this bad boy on.

There's something scratching your half case 😉

Don't know too much about Leica, but do these cameras scratch both the film and the case? Makes me wonder, can they scratch the lens too?🤩

Anyway, I'd really like to see examples of images with this lens!

I like the size. Looking forward to to seeing some photos and hearing what you have to say about the lens after you've used it a while too.

Did you follow the instructions of how to properly dispose of your lens? I’m sure Leica, like many others, dedicates the first several pages of the manual for your brand new, expensive item on how to throw it away.

No special instructions. According to Leica AG, they already knew it is going in the dumpster… they made it RoHS compliant for easy, compliant disposal 🥳

Forgive me for I have sinned - and tried it out in a digicam last night as I couldn't wait.

Link here:

Linked as this is a film forum, so I didn't want to post digi pics here.

Of course someone jumped into that thread and said how terrible the lens is etc etc. Even though that is what I led with!

This is a crap lens, empirically. But it is a superb lens if it fits the purpose you have in mind.

Anyway, now it's on a film camera waiting to be used.

It was raining last night - on and off - when I used it. I wasn't expecting the rain as it seemed to have cleared up earlier. Anyway, because the lens has such a low profile, I was able to slip the camera in and out of my jacket very easily.

Looks like a good lens to me, but of course not in the comparing graphs type of 'good'. But who the hell cares what the graphs say anyway, it's what your eyes and brain like, and how much you get out of it. I'd like this lens, the pocketability would be a big plus but it's not uncommon when Lomo commission their lenses they often don't turn out to be terrible as often assumed, hence the amazing 38mm on the LC-A 120 medium format camera.

The lens on the LC-A 120 is great. Wish the rest of the camera held up.

Also I have their original Petzval bokeh control lens, and that as given me some killer pics. AND... the Neptune lenses they sell are really good. The only problem with those is having to manually stop down the apertures sucks. I know that's the whole thing w them, but I haven't been able to get used to it and find it gets in my way, instead out of my way like good gear would. But optically the lenses are really good.
Still, I'll be selling them as I just do not get along w the manual stop down nonsense.

Very interesting thread! I agree that the LCA-120 lens is terrific. It's low in distortion, too.

How do you see these lenses impacting your photography? Do you feel you can be more creative? I'm curious. I find that the LCA-120 frees me from trying to get a technically good picture to just explore the subject matter. I wonder if these after-market lenses have a similar effect for you.

I primarily got the Minitar for fun. To stop being so serious about this process. But it will be interesting to see what I can get out of it to determine how I can use it creatively. The tiny profile really turns an M into an easily hidden carry, which is super handy depending on the neighbourhood one may be in.

The Neptune lenses? 15mm, 35, 50 and 80mm. Again fun, and some curiosity. But for me there is no use case scenario for them, so they gotta go.

Thanks. That's a refreshing attitude.

....and now that the brand new, $5000 Leica is repaired, it is worthy of this lens.

I can't vouch for the OP but Leica M cameras have been worthy of every compatible lens from the 1930's to the 2020's, it's kind of the menu you buy the camera for, or have I read you correctly?

His brand new Leica M6 scratched film. A camera that scratches film is garbage. Now that it is fixed, and no longer scratches film....

Just took some more pics on my digital Leica as it is bright sunshine right now. Will post them on the other thread above.
But for now, it's on film so this w/e I'll get to shoot some and see how it performs.
I mean, how it looks, because we know technically it will perform like cr@p. But maybe it will give me some pics I like the look of? It could happen - it already has on digital.

I looked at the other thread. I didn't see any crap photos (from this lens). It may not be your thing but, I'd be interested in seeing a few photos from this little gem stopped down a bit...maybe f/5.6 and f/8 ? Digital of film...doesn't matter to me.

EDIT: Ok, just looked back at that other place agian. I see some photos at f/11...it looks good but still has a lot of vignette. And yeah, the LR profile just makes it look...bad.

Thanks for sharing!

No problem! I think that this lens really should be used on film. Which is what I'm now doing. We don't need to steeenkin profiles with film!

p.s. vignette is the thing w this lens. If that's not your bag baby, use a different lens. I was a little surprised how it pretty much stayed the same stopping down.

On the upside - it gives a very cool look if your subject is lit, but the area around is darker as this really makes the subject pop.

I really have no problem with a little vignette. I'm just surprised that stopping down appears to have no effect with respect to the vignette. That seems quite unique to me.

I really love how small this lens is. I wish more M-mount lenses were small. Its size make the old collapsible Elmar one of the best lenses in my opinion....I just wish there were an affordable, modern replacement. Thinking maybe, this comes close.

The TTA 28mm f5.6 is tiny. And honestly a very good lens. It may look like a Leica Summaron 28m 5.6 on the outside, but the optical formula is very modern and very different.
Yes, it is not as tiny as the body cap Minitar, but the next tiniest thing. Kinda.

Hmm, I just realized on digital the Minatar lens gives a blue-ish tone that is very reminscent of the Fuji Classic Neg jpeg film sim profile! So if you want your Leica images to have the same color tone as the Fuji film sim, use this lens.

In more ‘serious’ news, I have noticed that the aperture markings are, shall we say, poop. The only marking that accurately corresponds to the real aperture opening is 2.8. After that, the real aperture is larger/bigger opening that the number indicated climaxing at marked f22, which in actual fact is only f11.
I didn’t notice this when I was using the m10r as I had it on auto ISO. But with my M7, using Sunny f16 as a baseline, in blazing sunshine today f16 should have been 1/250. But, stopping the lens all the way down to f22 still gave a 1/1000 reading. So at least 2 stops off. Just looking at the lens it was clear to see that f22 is actually about f11 judging by the size of the hole.

So this lens, in the condition I have it, is a f2.8 - f11 lens. Not an f2.8 - f22 lens. It doesn’t matter too much if you are using a camera with a ttl meter, as it will still accurately meter, you just ignore what it says on the lens. Problem is if you want to use this lens on a camera w/o a built in meter, like my M-A, or an M4 etc.

Anyway, I just got my colour film back and will see how this lens looks on film. I’ll then decide whether to keep it, or return it because of the aperture issue.
