Ah..

She cheated. "Vintage toy camera parts" tells me that she's using a shutter mechanism from some other camera. Tichy would never have done that.

You're a Tichý purist

I have seen her work in person and met her a couple times, definitely an artist with a clear vision of what she wants.

No comparison she is very different in both her approach and content and she is definitely less creepy. If Tichy hadn't done his work behind the iron curtain it would have been completely ignored imo but since he did we are told the whole nude photography was forbidden, cenzorship, etc... BS.

I do like her work and what she's doing. I did something similar myself a few years ago, though the Tichý purist in me forbade me from using any reclaimed camera parts. What I ended up with was a 35mm camera in a small tin trinket box with a magnifying bead lens and refrigerator magnet shutter. I've been meaning to pull it out again and make some new pictures.

I wouldn't compare her to Tichy. She might not have built her own camera if she had known that the most that would come of it would be an association with Tichy. She's an exploratory artist. He was an obsessive-compulsive pervert.

And your clinical evidence for that diagnosis is ... ?

Oh ... that's right, there isn't any, it's just one of the very tired kneejerk reactions whenever Tichý's name is mentioned.

If, at first glance, most people are ready to believe he was a pervert, maybe it's because he was a pervert. That's known as the "reasonably prudent person" test. No special analysis of his work shows anything different.

He was sent to the gulag for his "anti-social" behavior of stalking women to take photographs of them, in most cases without their knowledge or permission. His compulsion continued after he was ostracized. Seeing his prurient images, along with knowing the context in which he produced them, leads me to believe he would be on a sex-offender list if he were caught doing it where I live. Maybe that's just "avant garde" to some folks.

Most of Tichy's images are pretty coy, and wouldn't rate as the softest of porn. Garry Winogrand shot "Women Are Beautiful" which covered similar subject matter and few thought of him as a pervert. Tichy's art is in the overall aesthetic, the stark prints, retouched details, decorated card frames and the disposable way he treated his work. Would someone looking for a quick thrill go to the effort of making his own camera when he could buy one?

My point is that the photographer referenced in the article linked in the original post deserves recognition for her own work. The nature and context of their work is completely different, though they did both make cameras.

I have no objection to Tichy's photographs being displayed as art, so long as his work is subject to the same public criticism as anyone else's. My opinion that he was a pervert is quite common and was not intended to elicit the ire of those whom it stings. I apologize to those who push the ethical envelope. Those at the edges keep the middle ground clear for us milk-toasts.

Perversion suggests the distortion of a moral norm. By that standard much of the art in the world's galleries is perverted, showing as it does naked or suggestively clad young women. Tichy may have been a bum and a drop out but I don't see anything in his oeuvre that suggests perversion of the kind that's being hinted at. If we're asking was Tichy a bit odd, there can be little doubt. He was certainly missing something, but not as an artist.
