A die to cut film

I have been contemplating cutting my own film for 5x7 from 8x10. It seems to add up to some pretty good savings. I know people do this with rototrimmers and those finger chopping paper cutters but I like my fingers and roto trimmers are real expensive. I contacted Accucut and it looks like I can get one made with a notch for under fifty bucks. I do not think this is bad. What do you folks think?

Mark, that is much less than I would have thought..not to mention that I had been thinking about finding something that could notch the film - read that some of the non-name brand film did not have a notch.

Will you be able to do this and not create any dust/debris?? (I'm assuming you don't have one of those dust free rooms like a computer chip maker...)

Any time you handle film you risk the chance of putting debris on the film. You have to remove it, cut it, re-pack it, remove it again, load the holder... Not to mention the chances of scratches etc...

Seems like the cost savings you might gain would be offset with backup exposures and frustration over dirty negs...

Just my initial thought,

I know people who do it. The reason I wanted to go with a die is because there will be no dust. I figure there are folks out there who cut from 100 foot rolls and they say it is daoble so why can't I. Plus I want to shoot delta 100 in 5x7, and this is the only way to do it.

I am having the notch worked into the die. This way I could probably do two maybe three sheets at a time.

From a spectator's point of view, I am very interested in how this turns out. Please let us know how this works out in the end, and if you can, post pictures of the die itself. I am not a LF shooter (yet), but I am curious beyond salvation...
