A couple of prints from my trip to San Diego 12-2018

I took a Christmas trip to San Diego this month because my mom has dementia and is getting progressively worse, I wasn't sure that she'd make it to her birthday in May (my normal visit time)

I'm not sure she knew precisely who I was but she was able to laugh and enjoy the moment and that was good.

For the picture of her and myself, I set my camera on a table and used the built in timer. The focus isn't dead-on but it's good enough for a 4x6 which is what is now in the photo album.

The other pictures are of a Cactus that I saw while walking in her neighborhood and my son (who I visited while I was in SD). I caught him right in the middle of a weird gesture...lol. Also the contact sheet from this roll.

This was just what was on the last of this roll, I have another full roll to develop plus a disposable color camera to get developed.

They look pretty good in terms of resolution. In the U.K. we have a problem even imagining how it is possible to be so lightly dressed in December

That's the ONLY good thing about California...the year round great weather. (and the food) but a lot of the rest of it sucks. I wouldn't live there.

By a wide margin for sure.
On a busy day where I live "traffic" is defined as " there are more than 5 cars that I can see while driving down the street"
Nobody charges me for plastic bags at the supermarket.
I can wear a side arm to the store.
I can afford an actual house and not a cardboard box (and have money left over)
I can afford to fill my car up with fuel before payday.
And don't get me started on the lack of personal respect by the folks who you meet there. I'm not knocking everyone there but certainly there is an impersonal "me me me" thing there that isn't present in WV where I live. Folks treat each other differently here.

And the list goes on...

Wearing a side arm to anywhere let alone a supermarket is just so foreign to us up here in Canada. I'm glad we don't. I'd move back to Japan then.

no side arm?... you can run across some tough customers in the deli department ordering a pound of salami!!!

But where Andrew and I are from the pound of salami would end up being the only weapon available to both of you!
To the OP: I'm glad you had the opportunity you had with your mother, and your photos are a testament to how much you care about her.
I mentioned your description of West Virginia to my wife. So much of your post describes a place that seems civilized and full of humanity. And yet, the reference to a sidearm seems to my wife and I to be exactly the opposite. What struck us both was how different our expectations of society are to many who live south of the International border that is literally blocks away from our home.
I agree with Andrew about being glad of our different norm.
And I wish the OP and his mother peace.

That pic of you and you mom is fantastic. Helping the elderly is hard work. Helping them be happy is even more difficult. She is quite obviously happy to have been with you.

I honestly didn't realize how difficult it was until I spent a week in training. My sister does it 24/7 and I really feel for her. It's so difficult, she's given up her life for it. I'm sure my mom won't make it past this year so that's good only in that she's not going to continue to suffer and my sister won't continue to take care of her. It's hard to see your parent reduced to being a child. I'm glad that I had this time with her.

rpavich, I can empathize with your experiences with your Mom. I went through it with my father and now my wife's mother is in the latter stages of Alzheimer's. My father in law wants to keep her at home as long as he can.

I only wish that the 4 generation photo that I took of them at Thanksgiving looked half as good as yours with your Mom. Shame that she is clear across the continent.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that. My sympathies.
I is a shame that we live so far but I'm glad that plane flights aren't as expensive as they used to be....

I can't wait to see what's on the rest of the rolls.
