Will the Lords of APUG allow a discussion about their own lack of ethics, by closing down honest and open minded discussions? Or is this out of bounds, as well?

What sort of ethics (or lack thereof) are we allowed to discuss on this site?

Do not take a thread being closed as a personal affront: it is simply that the topic is considered out of bounds.

Discussion about other forums is itself problematic from an ethical standpoint as the owners of those forums are unlikely to be either aware of a thread here or elsewhere, nor in a position to defend themselves or their actions. The same goes double for the individual posters in those other forums who may be mentioned and their posts commented upon.

Cheers, Bob.

Tim,
It is APUG policy that negative discussions of other sites not be allowed. It is akin to not allowing discussions of banned members. Neither have the ability to defend themselves and it is bad form (I know that no other sites follow this policy, but we feel it is the right thing to do). Your post was deleted for this reason. If you wish to question the policies of that site go there and do so.

Additionally we've had to make a rule that moderator decisions not be questioned online, but via PM's. Otherwise, during the rare times we need to edit or delete threads or posts, we get a never ending steam of threads discussing our actions.

I apologize if it seems heavy handed or if you were unaware of the policy, but it tends to work well.

Meanwhile, David and Ole are very ethical and I do try.

APUG is a forum for the discussion of traditional photography. Ethical questions related to photography are on topic for the forum--censorship, copyright, image manipulation, model releases, photographing strangers, street photography, paparazzi, relationships with clients, things like that.

Discussions of the moderation policies of other forums are off topic, for the reasons JD Callow stated.

Another reason that we've decided not to host that sort of discussion here is that sometimes disgruntled or banned members from other forums wash up on the shores of APUG en masse--not that this is the case in this particular instance--and then they open endless threads about all the problems with the other forum. They come to APUG to get away from those problems, but instead of getting away from them, they bring them along with them, and then the rest of us have to deal with the bad feelings coming from some other community.

If you don't like something about APUG, then post it in the Feedback forum or PM Sean or the moderators. If you don't like something about some other forum, then post it on that forum. If you're banned from that forum, or if your complaints are censored, then start a blog and say what you want there.

I'll just add that while we allow general discussions about our own ethics and/or lack of such, specific complaints are better dealt with via PM.

And you can bash us all you like, but we will not allow the moderators of other forums to be bashed here.

There's not much you can do about ethics - except move to Thuffolk. That's what I thay anyhow.

My grandpa used to say...
"Anger that lasts more than about 30 seconds is ego.....get over yourself."

I don't see how you go from the moderation team doing their job to them lacking ethincs...in fact, it seem to me quite on the contrary. They do have ethic, therefore, they moderate.

I don't know what the issue at hand is, but if it has something to do with another forum (or this one) perhaps it should be taken up directly with the moderator. The "open letter" form of lodging a complaint rarely gets positive results and almost always irritates and annoys the person(s) with the most power to alter the situation.

Good luck!

Adam

WELL YOU CAN PUT ME DOWN AS BEING IN FAVOR OF THE EXCEPTIONAL LACK OF ETHICS. COMMON, PATOOEY! I SAY THAT ANYTHING TO DUE WITH COMMON SHOULD BE DROWNED IN YON SPITOON AND TREATED TO A LARGE SPAY OF PLOWBOY.

For most of us the principles of good or bad ethics may seem like a pretty easy concept to understand. Right is right and wrong is wrongright? But who's to say what's right and what's wrong? Whose ethical standards should we accept? Once you think about it, ethics seems much more complicated than your mother's warnings about what "good little boys and girls do." At work we need to come to a common understanding of what "big boys and girls do" so we can work in harmony and be productive workers. With the question of right and wrong unsettled, coming to a common understanding on ethical issues can be confusing.

Fortunately, the question of right and wrong in this regard was settled long ago.

The APUG universe is well bounded (roughly correthponding to thurrey, as has been noted) and seems all the more pleasant for it. Ethical arguments concening photos of ladyboys or unclothed ladybeagles are actual subjects for discussion. Plenty of ethics goin' on.
