A big tripod HEAD thread

yes, but that one wont take the custom pentax 67 plate from RRS neither. It would be great if their plates could simply be attched to the 410...
What would be the solution, anyoine else?

In the meanwhile I saw this one:



Can someone explain this? it's a Gitzo 1372 but than with some sort of compact knobs. Is every gitzo available that way? Does anyone has experience with them?

I believe that Kirk does make a Arca-swiss style base plate (or holder) built on top of a plate that will fit this head. Or, you could get one of the threaded base plates from RRS or Kirk and just screw that into the QR plate that came with the head. But you're right that you're not just going to be able to slip an Arca style QR plate into this head without some additional parts.

That's the same problem that's holding me up. I wish I could find a 3 way head that takes Arca style QR plates. The only option I've found is the Arca-Swiss cube which is just ever so slightly out of my price range.
 
Kirk makes a special Arca adapter for 410, but it costs as much as the head itself. I remember reading somewhere Kerry adapted a 410 to mount a regular Arca clamp, but that involves drilling and filing of the head.

I do have an older Gitzo head. On that head, the handles unscrew. My guess is that they are interchangeable, hence yoiu might be able to get heads with shorter handles, or you might be able to order the shorter handles from Gitzo and swap them out yourself. I'd give Gitzo, or their distributor in your country, a call.

For the rest this really really tiring. i guess I will have to abondon the idea of a arcastyle pentax plate, unless I will go for a arca b1 or b2.

I like the 410, but fear it it just a little to junior, for my likes. The heavier version will drive the price up twice... unfair...

If anyone wants to sell their 405 manfrotto to me for 150 dollar or less, be me guest and send me a PM...

I will take a ballhead from school. I looked and it is a HAMA, I think that one won't be a good representation of what a ballhead can be, right?

Anyway, there are a few questions:

at first, the ballheads, how good they may be all have the limitation of being a ballhead. the arca swiss B2 hasn't. Is the arca swiss B2 THE desirable head? Will it instantly please almost veryone, and is the only bad side it's price?? I am curious.

At this point, I hope to be able to test a bogen 410, but think it will be to loose for a pentax 67. The bogen 405 is 400 dollar... whick opens the door to a arca swiss B2. At this point when I come to senses a simpler heavy 3way pantilt by bogen seems the only option.... (only because the 410 is to light most likely...)

Last thing... Does anyone knows a website in europe that offers payment in multiple terms?? I am not going to go crazy, but I am just curious...
A good head will last forever, and 20 dollar a month won't hurt so bad...

Again, if you are really considering spending $400 dollars on a head again, do check the Nikonians site that I posted for the Markins heads. These heads are shipped out from I believe Germany. And you would have a choice of the L or R version that we discussed.

i was thinkning a bit, and what I am about to say is purely a thought. I am not seriously thinking on doing this... But I figured it would not hurt sharing it here and see what you have to say.

I thuoght is can't be that hard to get the arca plate at for instance RRS fr your own camera. And then glue it to the plate that fits the bogen head...
This should work. And by glueing I mean really glueing with an epoxy glue.

I 'm curious what you guys think about this...

The Really Right Stuff Plate will have a 1/4" threaded hole. Thus you can screw the two quick release plates together. I would not trust just glue, especally as the adhesive that holds the rubber mat on the bogen quick release head isn't very strong. If you must use an adhesive, take the bogen plate off of the head. Remove the rubber mat and use epoxy. Or drill and tap another hole in the arca plate, and drill a hole through the Manfrotto plate in the same place. Then the camera couldn't turn, but you'd have to be careful that the head of the second screw didn't interfere with the mounting of the Manfrotto quick relase plate to the head.
 
So you can just screw the RRS plate to the bogen plate? Off course there is still a turning point, so you need another fixation as you said.
Epoxy is kind of definitive So you can't use the bogen or the RRS plate for anything else. the best thing might be like you said, to go and copy the first screw from the bogen, and drill a second hole in the RRS plate. that way you can fixate it with to screws. So this seems a fairy doable solution. Material is alu. So easy to tap in en drill trough, right?
Is this a common solution? it should be...

Instead of gluing a RRS plate to a Bogen plate, why not just attach a Arca clamp to the Bogen plate. RRS sells clamps with multiple screw holes. Just tap an additional hole in the Bogen plate and attach a Arca clamp to it.

because that will cost me an extra clamp, which ain't cheap... Plus I'll wind up with a double quick release... A Qr mounted on a Qr seems less ideal than just a Qr with a double plate...


I don't know if people will read all their way trough 7 pages of head posts anymore. But I hope someone can clearify something for me...
I am charmed by three way heads. I might like arca swiss b2/b1 but those or too expensive. I really like the bogen 405 by it's concept and it looks to operate very nice.

BUT is there 1 reason to not just go with the bogen 329RC4? I like to get my camera horizantal. But I don't do macro/architecture...
Will a geared head be of any use for me??

Thanks again. If I'll buy a ballhead I'll strongly consider the markins. You seem really found of them. But then again, I think it'll be a 3way.
I know I like that, and there is no way really to test a good ballhead like arca or markins at all here.
but If I am going to buy a ballhead, if not now than in the future, I'll defenitally consider the markins.

In the mean while, I know the 405 is not te lightest solution. But it only weight 3,2 LB. (1,6 kg) My current is 2,4 lb (1,2kg) and that is on the light side I feel. My tripod weights over 10 lb...
So weight aint of no consideration, allthough it must go too crazy off course.

The point I mentioned in my previous post is still important to me:
Allthough I like the 405, and think it'll be a great perfromer (and compact). Is it truly bullshit to go with it, if you don't do macro/architecture?
will the common three way heads be just as nice then? I mean not the 141rc but the somewhat better heavier ones by manfrotto.
Or is the 405 simply a better performer, although one's not into macro and architecture??
