After 5 days of snow, wind, snow and then some wind and snow we now have a beautiful morning here in the land "where polar bears roam the streets".
I am free from work today so it is time to load up the trusty Seagull with some HP5+ and go out to "make some reportage".

"Small Town in Winters Grip" I think I will call it. I promise to invite all APUG-members to the big opening at the famous art gallery in Paris or London. Hasn't decided on location yet. Note to self: Discuss venue with manager.

If that doesn't come true maybe I will just post them here.

Well, I was going to complain about our long dark January and February winter nights here in Kentucky, USA. But you two fellows have completely upstaged me. Finland...Warsaw? I concede.

Upstaged indeed, so much for thinking our winters are bad.
But there are signs that the trends of the last few million years will hold, and spring will happen yet again.

We had one of the warmest winters ever. Too little rain, strong winds and days that felt like spring or even summer in the middle of winter. I love all four seasons and really want the distinctions between them. I really hope that proper winter hasn't disappeared yet.
Truth be told, good thing we don't get snow down here. I had enough for a lifetime even if I miss it sometimes.

Luckily Winter came on a weekend back in December for us in Oregon so none of the schools had to close. We are in full blooming budding blossom sprouting Spring. I am wondering how well the shutter of the trusty Seagull holds up in the Finland Winter.

Just got an e-mail from some family in Hawaii, they were complaining about the 59 degree low they had last month.

They got no sympathy from this Colorado boy.

(Now it's time for me to Google "Hawaii real estate")

We (Netherlands - not that much north of Aristotelis) are 'enjoying' one of the coldest winter in years. Go figure.

Not that it is that cold, mind you. No record breaking low temperatures. Just a bit colder and for longer than in years.

And apropos false impressions: when were polar bears last sighted in Finland, Shimoda? About the same time (and as often) as in the hometown of the Royal and Ancient Polar Bear Society, right? I.e. never ever?


We had a not so beautiful day. The sun was out, that's not it. But it started with frost and a light dusting of snow.
We have had temperatures of even over 25 degrees centigrade in march over here...

Oh dang.... Just heard we'll get more snow, and the cold will continue...

Actually the Seagull, shutter and all, holds up much better than I had expected. If you accept that you should only use f-stops 8-16 and never ever change shutter speeds after you cocked it then it is a nice little camera. Most likely it will see less use once the Rolleicord lands.

We DO have polar bears here. But we are not afraid of them. We keep feeding them penguins so that they leave us alone.
It CAN be a bother though, if you leave the igloo and forget to bring a penguin. Luckily they also eat sandwiches. Mostly ham.

We feed them left over parking attendants over here. We have to collect some every two or three days. Not a big problem though.

It was snowing again just now... That is a problem.

It is raining again today. It has been very wet for the last couple of weeks. But also warm (28-30C). Perfect conditions for the lens fungus to get started

ps. I caught the tailend of a radio program yesterday where some bloke was talking about making bags out of empty penguins (ie whole uncut-penguin skins, minus the mushy red stuff). Interesting...

I don't have anything to say about photography in extreme cold, but read this the other day on Jeff Master's Wunderblog. The first link is for the current blog post and the second is for the archived page on Europe's "Pole of Cold", not too far from Finland.

On February 19th, Europe recorded its 2nd lowest temperature of all time in Russia, a bit east of Shimoda in Finland. -56.4ºC (-70F) at 9am in Hoseda-Hard, Russia.

On another page I read that the Southeastern US is having a colder than normal winter, especially Florida and, as we know from the just concluded Winter Olympics, it is a warmer than normal winter in Northwest US/Southwest Canada, thanks to El Niño.

Uh oh...the end of hockey season is beginning for you!

Congratulations on your men's bronze...though I have to admit I was rooting for the Slovak Republic, because I am a big Marian Hossa fan (and also Chara).

Yes, I have been led to understand there has been some kind of sporting event taking place in Canada I think. Don't know much about it. Can't have been that important.

Spectacular skiing yesterday. Sunny and +2C. As the saying goes here, we get 10 months of winter and two months of poor skidooing.

Over here, it is 6 months of bad weather, followed by 6 months of bad weather.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some snow left here in June (judging by the huge amounts of it). They say it's not gonna be warm until May. And warm is just 10-15 C. In previous years, snow has usually melted by the end of March. End of April is more likely this year.
