This is a home made telephoto lens for a Speed Graphic. It is made from aluminum and painted black.

The lens is a Burke and James 17 inch f10 process lens.

The previous owner obviously was trying to solve the problem of how to get a telephoto for a Speed Graphic. They were very clever here.

The lens comes off the tube with a few screws. You can then use it on your large format camera. If I am not mistaken, this should cover the 11x14 format.

The aperture blades operate smoothly, the barrel anodizing obviously has usage marks; see the photos for condition. The glass has a small spot off to one side and a few tiny cleaning scratches; nothing that will affect your photos.

interested, i think...

good morning,

i am a newbie to LF and would use this on my 4x5 crown graphic.

what focal length would this approximate on 35mm or 6x6 120?

thanks,
smiling gecko, aka kenneth

that depends on what magnification you want to shoot at. shooting at infinity will produce a different focal length equivalent than shooting up close, say a frame filling portrait. for infinity it's just straight ratio of format diagonal lengths. for up close, then the bellows extension becomes significant and it will put you in the "macro zone" with the 4x5, which will result in a much longer equivalent focus than the infinity focus.

so 4x5 diagonal = 6.40" and 2.25" diagonal = 3.18"...at infinity then this is equivalent to shooting a (3.18/6.40)*17" = 8.45" = 215mm. up close though it can be equal to a LONGER lens depending on how close you want to focus. If we know the length of the tube, we can figure out the total bellows draw that is possible on your camera and give you that length--closest focus. since that thing don't look like 17" long, I"m thinking that with the bellows almost all the way out, plust that tube, you'd get infinity focus---that is--it wouldnt' be a closeuplens...but I'm just going by looks here....don't know the actual dimensions.

This is a barrel lens that has no shutter. You would have to use a Speed Graphic with its focal plane shutter or use a bulb exposure and count seconds.

how long is that extension tube thing? I'm actually interested in that if it's the right size for this other camera back I have

It is 5 1/2 inches long.

ahhh...ok...that may actually work out--that' the standard 4" square old anniversary speed graphic board, right?

will you sell the tube separate? I really don't need the lens--I have a LOT of redundancy in that lens size range. if so, let me know please thanks.

Yes, it is 4x4.

The tube is matched to the lens. It might be easier to keep this lens and sell your other one than trying to match it to this tube.
