I just picked up a very nice Zeiss Maximar 207/7 off the big auction for almost nothing. It is perfect except no sheet film holders came with it. I had some stuff stored away and it included one holder, two boxes of Tri-X pack film from 1958(good luck on this) and one film pack adapter. I searched, but instead of solving my confusion I just became more confused. What are the other film holders that will work in the 207/7 besides Zeiss? Kodak 33 (3 1/4 x 4 1/4), ICA 9x12, Russian 9x12 etc., etc., etc.. I just want something I can use to shoot with this camera since I really like playing with oldies like this. John W

I have a 9x12 Zeiss 230/7 ... with Kodak holders, but it doesn't say anything on them.. except made in Germany.
I have a 3x4 that will fit to the back, and it will shoot two negs and its states Filmel Boston Mass.

Not much of a help but there you are.

I have some two-shot holders that fit my Kodak Recomar 18 and wouldn't mind finding some for the 207/7 Maximar, but bying off the auction is a gamble as to whether they fit or not. The single sheet holders that fit say Zeiss Ikon and have the number 665/7 film. I just need to find out what other makes will work before I bid on them. JohnW

It should be the same as the ICA Maximar 9x12, in which case 721/6 holders.

Check out page 22 of the 1925 ICA catalogue:

I'll find out if they are the same later today. A friend of mine from down-state is sending me up two ICA 726/6 holders and three 726/7 Zeiss holders that he found in his massive hoard pile. This is the same fellow that got me started in camera collecting/swapping/selling 34 years ago by practically giving/selling me an early Super Ikonta B at a camera show he was setup at. We have been very good friends ever since. He also said he has many more 9x12 holders and could match some once we know what fits. At least I can get started this way. John W

Hmm, 726/6 (or later Zeiss 726/7 which have a couple of small modifications but the same basic design) fit 9x12 Ideal or Juwel cameras. I think 9x12 Favorit too. They are very similar to 721/6 holders, they might be usable but they won't really fit correctly. Years ago I tried to modify some 721/6 holders to make them stay in place on a 9x12 Ideal, I ended up with a couple of holders that I didn't use and were no longer much use with the cameras they were originally intended for.

You should be able to swap those 726 pop off holders quite easily though, and 721/6 holders come up on eBay quite frequently, though sometimes with daft prices.

I recently purchased a set of single plate holders for my dad's old Maximar that fit perfectly. They are marked Zeiss Ikon "665/7" and are about 100mm wide, 500mm long (minus slide) and 4mm thick. The side that faces the camera is perfectly flat, so avoid any alternate holders that have ridges or flanges there. There's velvet light trap material under the edge where the dark slide pulls out. The camera itself has the other half of the light trap.

Most of the holders I've seen from Russia and Ukraine look pretty beat. Search for "Zeiss 665/7" and see what turns up.

Yes, I researched a little after the last post and now see the "pop-off" design of the 726 holders will not work on the Maximar. I also read that the Kodak Recomar 33 holders will fit the Zeiss Maximar, but I'd have to see it to believe it. These plate cameras certainly aren't my area of expertise. They are sure pretty and well made.

Yes, I have one "like new" Zeiss 665/7 holder in my hoard and it fits the camera like a glove. I think I'll eventually end up with those, but would use anything I can get my hands on that will fit the camera just so I can get started. Pretty hard to go out for a stroll with only one film holder. I'd have to carry a changing bag and two boxes along. John W

I have some of these Kodak holders. They fit my Maximar and seem to work OK. The opening is slightly larger than the Zeiss 665/7 holder. Note that these Kodak holders do not need a film insert.

Chuck,
I'd like to run onto some of those Kodak 9x12 holders. I'll keep my eyes open for them. John W

Still waiting for my holders........! I have one other question about this Maximar 207/7 and it's about the lens. I think I have dated the lens from about 1931-32 and was wondering if it could be single coated from that date? It sure looks to be single coated to me. Anyone know for sure. John W

I have some Huttig holders that may be the right fit, I can dig them out tomorrow, Huttig became part of ICA which later joined Zeiss Ikon.

Ian

Ian,
I'm away from home at the moment, but when I return I'm going to take some pictures and measurements and post them. I do know one thing and that is there sure were many different makes and models of these plate cameras. I just never knew that until I actually got a couple and searched for parts. John W:crazy:

I found one last night, Ithink there's 4 or 5 or these plate holders, they are marked, ICA, Huttig Dresden, and have V shaped grooves either side, see O in the attached image.

It's a real pain finding the right holders I'm lucky that my 5 or 6 9x12 plate cameras will all take the same holders.

I'm home now, but thanks to Ian I don't need to take picture. The one holder that I have for it is the type "O" and has double lips that are "v" shaped. It's marked Zeiss Ikon 665/7. So, now part of the mystery is solved for me and you were right Ian about the Huttig, ICA film/sheet holders fitting the my Maximar 207/7 camera. John W
