mshchem - read the fine print. $315 per 10-sheet box, yes; but the minimum order is 40 boxes, so that translates into nearly $14,000 up front. There was an estate sale near here this year where they were trying to give away free a whole stack of boxes 11X14 Portra, To prove that there was actual film in the box, the estate agent opened up each box, removed the film from the inner pkg, and took a picture of the whole film stack!

Assuming the film was in good condition, giving away boxes of 11x14 Portra is just laziness. They would bring real money on the open market. Relative to a tony estate sale, the film isn't a big item.

Hi Wyofilm - It wasn't just 11X14 Portra. There were dozens of 50-sheet boxes of 8x10 color film too, and a number of boxes of custom order 12X20 Portra, real expensive stuff. Although those weren't opened, they'd sat around unrefrigerated for so long that they were probably gone bad. The photographer in the family had apparently either passed away or become incapacitated years earlier. All the Portra was two generations back from what is available now. But even then it would have amounted to an awfully expensive film addiction.

Ok, got it. Too bad. It is hard to see nice film go to waste.

I've used plenty of post-dated frozen 8x10 color film without incident, provided it wasn't over 20 yrs expiration or intended for a real fussy application like duplication. But even a year laying out on a shelf, and shifts become a risk, depending on the climate.

Ah, the 8x10 rabbit hole...here is how I fell in, not sure how long I will stay:

It started last year when I saw a deal on a 3005 drum I could not resist because I figured hey, what if a workshop participant wants to use 8x10? Fast forward to January and I am killing time on a flight on the way to a commercial job. I see a Sinar P2 8x10 conversion kit on eBay and start watching it. Then the demon hits and I toss in a bid thinking I might not see another one ( have not ) and I'll be damned, I win it for about $800.
I then buy proceed to buy a 250mm 6.7 Fujinon and beastly Nikkor W 360mm 6.5, a dozen good film holders and a Sinar adhesive holder that took two months to come from Russia with love.

So far I like it, it's fun. I am not sure if it is worth it or not yet because I can't enlarge it right now. I have a Schneider 240mm Componon-S ready to go but it will be awhile to figure out the rest. But yeah, the film is very expensive. I broke it all in with a box of Catlabs 80, decent enough film and now have a stock of 200 sheets of Delta 100 and 100 sheets of Tmax-100 I bought from the classifieds on here.

Maybe I will make some 500 or so images with it and then sell it all and stick with my really productive formats which are 120 and 4x5, maybe being able to enlarge it will give it more life? I don't know but I do while on location it is a real attention getter and that is good for marketing.

But yeah, it is exponentially more expensive than any other film I use and I too feel the pain that others in this thread do.

Clean my refrigerator today and reorganized the film stuffed in there. Not quite half of the space is taken up by sheet film, I managed to make room for my 6 boxes of 11x14 (4 HP5+ and 2 FP4+) that have been stored in a cool room for a while. In there is also a couple boxes of Acros and and three of FP4+ in 8x10. The two vege crispers on the bottom of the fridge hold a large variety of 5x7 and there is some 4x5 shoved here and there...including two 100 sheet boxes of Kodak Copy Film. I have two 50 sheet boxes of 8x10 Tech Pan that should be in the fridge, but I have to have some room for food. And I just found four more unopened boxes of 8x10 under my light table -- three FP4+ (exp 7/21) and one of HP5+ 8x10.

So I am far more set than I realized...several years worth at my rate of use. Not quite sure how it happened. I make an effort to use some of it up this fall in the redwoods!

Time to load up some of that 5x7 (TMax400) -- might take the bike out for a ride in the redwoods tomorrow.
