8x10 Kodak film holder perplexment

I got a used 8x10 wooden Kodak film holder on Ebay recently. On the side it has the stamp "8x10 Eastman Film #1PAT Oct 9, 1923".

I pulled the darkslide and tried to open the bottom load the film, it seems to be glued down. Also, I noticed two small brads on each corner nailing the bottom part down. What am I doing wrong?

Not sure but maybe one of these
1) Not trying before buying
2) Not sending it back to the seller quick enough
3) Not pulling the nails out to see if it opens

With the price of 8x10 film these days, I'd shy away from older film holders. Even if they look mechanically perfect they can still leak light.

Somebody decided it shouldn't open any more. They probably used it for a display frame or some such shtuff. Get your money back.

Thanks for all your responses. This confirms my suspicions. The seller isn't a photographer, but an antique dealer. I have a good shoe piece now. Cost me all of $20.

In that case I'd try to make it functional again. Nothing to lose. Once I took apart some junk plastic 8x10 holders and got them working again, wood should be easier to work with. If it has 2 good darkslides that is $20 right there.

Sounds

Sounds fixable. I once bought a 1949 Ford for $100 and found out the kid who had it before me changed the generator and such equipment to GM parts. Some odd folks out there. Good luck.

Have you bought a plate holder and not a film holder?

On the good side, beaters can be used for display frames for prints.
