I have bought Klaus Lundsgaard’s kit for converting the Bessler to 8x10 and I'm fighting dust on glass surfaces of the carrier. It seems nearly impossible to keep that much surface area clean, so I was wondering if there has ever been 8x10 carriers that are glassless?
I was thinking of making something that holds the film in tension, perhaps with super magnets at the corners? Has there ever been carriers made that hold the film flat?
I know tensioning holders exist for 4x5"; Durst had a system that worked quite well, and I've once had a Beseler holder that also was effective although it did mar the margins of the film, which I found unacceptable. For 8x10" IDK if something similar has existed; I frankly don't see the magnet solution working well as 8x10" is just too large to avoid any sag.
I expect you'll have to live with the glass and work on dust management protocols.
HK made tensioning carriers for their machines (with 4kw light sources), they grab the corners on the sheet format ones and pull it to almost drum-like tension (as in you can tap it and hear if you've got the neg correctly attached). The 8x10 one is not terribly complex. The 120 one is the most complicated as it has sliding format masks.
