80mm film, what was this stuff used for?

Recently bought a canister of lucky C1021 with an 80mmx20m roll inside. I have heard passing mentions of 80 mm film before, but this is the first time that I’ve ever actually seen it.

I snipped a piece of film off the roll, and it has type II perfs along both edges, which does mean it can be used in 70mm cameras that need perfs (1 edge) if you cut 10mm off one side.

However, when I went to look at what type of cameras used it, I found almost no information about it whatsoever. I saw one tidbit about it being used in a Soviet bombsight camera, but that’s all I could find.

Curious to know if anyone here might have any insight.

Interesting. I guess you could also recut it to 2x3 sheets, or cut off both sets of perfs to get 61 mm for 120/220 rerolls. ISO 250 is a different emulsion than anything we see routinely now (other than Cinestill Double-X) in medium format.

The ebay seller who has that film says they shot test images at ISO 12, so I would expect some pretty good age related fog.

First post. Was searching for a way to shoot this film with out trimming one side. So far, I cut 4" strips, and packed the bottom of 4x5 film packs. Seems pretty clear. Also responds above 680nm.

Interesting what you say about the >680nm response; how did you determine this?

I used a 680nm filter to test, I don't have a 720 in 72mm-77mm. It could very well be all reds, and browns from the oak trees. I can scale down a sample when I get to my desk.
