7x17 Storage of Negatives

What do you guys do to store your 7x17 negatives?

I just called Superior Archival Materials to inquire about 7x17 negative storage envelopes. Although their website lists a solution, they referred me to Conservation Resources International (CRI) and told me that CRI was their source for these items. CRI said that anything to fit 7x17 would be a custom item.

I would like to have a solution like the archival poly bags that B&H and others sell. CRI will be happy to custom make me such an item, but I was wondering what others do.

I was looking for the same thing a few days ago. A search of APUG brought up this,
ULF Negative Storage Boxes from Genealogical Storage Products
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

I got a little lost on their web site, but the following email exchange sorted things out.
“I would like to purchase archival envelopes (possibly your L style) to hold 7x17" Ultra large format negatives. I will also need boxes to store the negative envelopes.
It would appear that your ULF Film Box - 17.75" Long x 7.75" Wide x 2" High
is the box I need. Which envelopes do you suggest to hold the negatives that will fit in this box?”

They responded, “You can find archival paper envelopes for the ULF format sizes in our web store. Dead Link Removed

It all seems a bit expensive, but I put in an order for a box and envelopes and we shall see how it works out. I’ll be happy to look at other solutions if there are some.

I posted in reference to this a few months back (maybe a year not sure)
I use the "print" pockets from Printfile. I talked with Printfile about the archival nature and they stated they would work (from the archival) standpoint as well as anything. They list them as being ideal for digital prints but the person I spoke with at printfile said that was just a marketing scheme on their part.

Its a bit of "waste" but I have likely close to 300 now (only know this because Im on my fourth package of 100ct) and they work great so far.
I use the eternity archival boxes in 11x17 size to store the negs.
very economical and keeps the negs handy.
Ive been trying to come up with a solution for storing what will likely only become a larger and larger negatives collection in the future. some 11x17 file cabinets would be ideal as then I could store them vertically and sort them by project/theme/date/etc.
oen of these days Ill figure out a way thats different then just a stack of boxes filled with negatives.

I have folders from Superior Archival Materials. I took the 16 x 20s and cut in half. Then tyvek taped the two pieces cut from the folder to make a second folder. I like this so I can write on the folder all neg info and exposure diagram. They have 8 x 10 folders also. A little more cost but I think it is worth it.

For 8x20 negs: Fold a piece of 16x20 renaissance paper in half. For 12x20 do the same with a piece of 20x24 renaissance paper. Apollo papers will work also. Much easier than an envelope to get the negative in and out.The Apollo paper is buffered with 2% calcium carbonate for use with black and white silver halide films and papers.

Apollo and Renaissance paper comes in 14x18 that will work for 7x17 negs and at about 23 cents per negative sleeve
