Anyone have any idea where someone whose not a movie producer could buy some 70mm or 65mm film stock? I'm talking about maybe IMAX film stock or even some Ultra Panavision stuff. I'm just really curious to try to jam it into a film back and see what happens haha. Any information would help, I e-mailed IMAX once, but they weren't receptive at all (i.e. they never returned my e-mail). Thanks in advance!

You could most likely buy it directly from Kodak by calling 1-800-621-FILM. That number takes you to Kodak's cine division. They will answer any questions. They also sell super 8, 16mm and 35mm film so I am sure that they can get 70/65mm. Please let me know how you make out.

I actually just found that number too! I'm going to give them a call tomorrow and see what will happen. I shall keep you posted Ekta.

Make sure you're sitting down when they give you the price. They don't sell the stuff in small quantities like smaller gauge films because it runs through the cameras so fast due to the large frame size. You can/could get 70mm still film rolls in the kodak portra series.

Wildbill, you want to ballpark the price for me?

Kodak Canada sell 65mm colour neg film in 1000 ft. rolls for about $1500 (US) each.

Edit: By colour neg film I mean their Vision line of cine films (although I believe that Portra is/was also available in 70mm)

That's quite the pretty penny, I'll still give them a call, maybe they'll give me a student discount :D

If you are a film school student you get 15 or 18% off.

There's still an offer on the table from Harman to make FP4/HP5 for a not outrageous minimum order, but there hasn't been enough interest to get it floated;

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Apart from that, Process Supplies should still have a lot of very cheap Fujichrome duping film that would certainly do for tests;

You could look for a short end (a re-canned length of film left over from a shoot) Several companies specialize in selling them.

Keep in mind that the movie folks use 65mm and print it on 70mm stock, so both the camera and the print film is not the same as used in still 70mm cameras. Also the Vision Stock is for Process ECN-2 not C-41 - while ECN2 is similar, it includes a first step to remove a black sticky messy layer called REM-JET from the back of the film. This is the same as the Coating on the back of Kodachrome.
You can probably find a catalogue showing all sizes available at http://motion.kodak.com/US/en/motion/index.htm

Yeah, it is 65mm. That slipped my mind. Or my mind slipped. Never sure which. Depends on where I'm holding on I guess.
