I recently acquired a Beseler 4x5 mx enlarger with a number of negative carriers, but none for 6x4.5 negatives. It does have one for 6x7 negs... is it worth trying to bother using it for 6x4.5 negatives (they do fit, but aren't constrained at the top and bottom), or is this going to be really annoying and not work at all?

(Really enjoying making 35mm enlargements with it, lots of fun!)

At least make a black paper mask to cover the 6x7 opening where the 645 neg does not cover...you need to prevent excessive flare because white light is bouncing around in the focus bellows because white light gets past the negative carrier! The 645 would also be somewhat flatter if held along three edges by metal and one edge by somewhat stiff black paper.

Do you leave your negatives in strips, or do you cut them individually?
If you leave them in strips, just print from one end of the 6x7 opening.
A 6x6 carrier would be even better.
And a larger glass carrier plus a mask would serve you well.

In the absence of fining the 6x4.5 carrier, I would recommend a glass 6x7 or 4"x5" carrier.
