645 and 6x7 slide duplication

Hi List;

I have a Mamiya RB67-pro S, a Mamiya 645 AFD, and a Nikon D50. I shoot a lot of slide film with the RB67 and the 645. Is there equipment available that will allow me to copy my own 6x7 and 645 sized slides?

Also, is there likewise an easy way for me to convert these same slides to digital via a copy process with the Nikon D50?

You'll need a means of focusing close enough: macro lens, extension tube, bellows.

Turn a colour enlarger head upside down, and use that as your light source: that way you can match colours. Shoot on duping film (lower contrast) if you can get it; otherwise use a blue filter. Leave the area around the original open, so that veiling flare will reduce the contrast. Shooting digi the same way is easy: I've done it often.

Or look for a Bowens Illumitran slide copier: they're not worth much nowadays, and some have contrast control features built in.

But insofar as this is just a question about copy work with a camera, which could use film or digital, I'll leave the thread open, as long as it stays about copy work.

Roger's answer is the answer I would give. I've done some duping like this using a camera on a copystand with a 5500K lightbox (Kaiser even makes a stand with a lightbox built in, if you want to get fancy). You can run some tests with the dupe film you have and determine if any filtration is required.

What kind of final quality do you need? If you need to capture all of the detail and fine grain in your original 6X7 and 645 slides you won't get it by either duping the slide in 35mm or by copying with a Nikon D50. To get all of the image quality in the slide you need to either, 1) make same size analog copies using close-up equipment and appropriate copy film (assuming such film is still available in medium format?), or 2) scanning with a very high resolution scanner.

Your question is one that unfortunately can not be answered thorougly on this forum since the best solution might include either analog or digital methods, and here they allow you to talk about one of the methods but not the other.
