6" f6.3 GOERZ ULTRA WIDE ANGLE PLANIGON LENS use & damage to

I've come into possession of the above-named, a 6" Goerz f6.3 ultra-wide angle Planigon. I have a=some questions about it that someone might perhaps be willing to address.

First, as you can see in the photo, it is damaged --specifically, the yellow filter glass has been shattered. The retaining rim is undamaged and the actual lens glass is perfectly fine.

a). Is anyone of the opinion that the lens could be used as-is and not have image quality affected (I seriously doubt this, but knowing virtually nothing about such matters, I am compelled to pose the question).

b). I presume this could be used on an 8 x 10; am I correct?

c). Could it be used without a shutter? If so, how?

d). If a shutter is necessary, what shutter would need to be used?

It's a 9x9 (aerial mapping) lens so it'll cover 8x10. Can you remove the yellow filter? Use paper as a negative and you'll have a nice long exposure. Use a hat as a shutter. What's the diameter of the glass? You could use a Packard if you can find one big enough.

a. depends on the lighting.
b. attach it to a 8x10, focus infinity wide open then stop down to f16 or f22 and check corner and edge sharpness.
c. yes, any lens can be used without a shutter. Use a lens cap, your cap, a hat, or any other light tight cover that will fit over the lens, stay in place, and block any light from entering it. Remove the cover for the exposure then replace. Don't expect time speeds faster than 1/2 second unless you are really fast.

It is a aerial camera mapping lens made by a number of makers under contract to USAF, was made to cover 9" x 9". The cameras that used 6"/6.3 Planigons shot 10" roll film.

I have some USAF data sheets that report on three 6" Planigons made, respectively, by B&L, Fairchild and Goerz under contract to USAF. The Goerz sheet gives the most detail. The bad news is that the lens is poorly achromatized, needs to be shot with heavy filtration. The worse news is that the filter is part of the design.

This http://sdrv.ms/1i4czGa has a link to the data sheets, page down to USAF lenses. The cross section gives the impression that the lens was delivered in a barrel with no diaphragm, since you have it is that the case?

Re putting it in shutter, the cameras Planigons flew on had focal plane shutters. The cells probably aren't direct fits in a standard shutter. Putting it in shutter might be possible, ask skgrimes for an estimate.

I have the identical lens. On the other end is a piece of optical glass about 1.25" thick. I would keep the yellow center weighted filter. if the chips just fall out perhaps they could be cemented back in with Canada Balsam or optical cement. They are small enough that they might be outside the image area of an 8 x 10 if oriented the right way. Mine came without a shutter or diaphragm. I plan on using the lens cap for exposure timing.

Surplus Shed has some aerial lens filters. I have no idea if there is anything close to the diameter and thickness you need. They seem to be cheap enough to experiment with:

The damage may not have a major effect. But you'd probably want to fashion some sort of shade to avoid it causing flare.

it has been done in large format to use a speed graphic shutter behind or in front of the lens in order to achieve suitable exposures. I would not waste my nice example, but I'm sure there are beater speed graphics out there that could be cannibalized
