Yesterday, I unexpectedly received some 4x5" sheet film holders, among them was one I had never seen before.

It is a Micro Precision Products Ltd (MPP) wooden (mainly) unit, that is different in two ways from anything I have ever seen before.

Firstly, unless I am doing something very wrong, the sheet film, Ilford FP4+ just floats in the holder, with seemingly no way to hold it in securely.

Secondly, in the centre of the holder there are two springs, presumably designed to give tension to the sheet film. But, and it is an interesting but, when I place a sheet of film in the unit, as far as I can see; the film is bowed.

I'm sort of assuming that the intended film size, is actually 4x5" and not the (current) actual size of 4x5" film as supplied.
Thoughts.

Mick.

Could it be a plate holder?

It is a plate holder. If you want to use film, you could get a film sheath. Or keep it if you think you might try plates at some time in the future.

Right then, it's a plate holder.

Many thanks to all of you, something I didn't know about.

Yep, I'll keep it, give it a clean and maybe, just maybe, do the odd plate or two one day.

Haven't done any glass plates since the mid seventies when we were (probably) the last graphic arts trade house cleaning and coating our own glass plates. These were used on a couple of our Klimsch gallery cameras. Used, kept in storage for about 3 months, then recycled.

Initially MPP put sheet film iserts into these holder, I have a box of about 30-40, later they rivet the inserts in place before changing to purpose made Film DDS/ The register is slightly different.
