This is consistent with what I found. The one TMY negative I tray developed in 510 for 9 minutes prints well on grade 3 with a water bath, so I guess you could call it grade 2-1/2. I rated the film at 200 when I made the photograph, as I always do. I don't know how this might relate to effective film speed.

Very gently. Just moving it around in the tray, about 50% of the time. Your continuous agitation probably explains your shorter times.

To anyone thinking of trying this developer: the negatives look deceptively thin. Be sure to print them before you standardize. This effect is even more pronounced with semi-stand development.

For what its worth, my times with this developer have been on the 8-10 minute range (I develop roll film on tanks, 3 gentle inversions per minute). I've only developed Foma 100 and surplus Maco UP100, and rate both at box speed (with incident metering).

Hey Jay,

Foma 100 with 510-Pyro has a very good look. On Forté Polygrade RC (neutral tone), my negs printed with no filtration. I'm developing them for 9 minutes at 1:100, 72F.

By the way, I rate it at e.i. 100 with an incident meter.

This weekend I tried a 1:500/one hour development, and it seems to work wonderfully for APHS-type scenes (e.i. still 100). That is to say, I shot a few frames during an overcast/rainy day, with an uncoated triplet lens folder, and the flatest scenes look quite good on the contact sheet. On this development I agitated for 30s initially, then 3 gentle agitations every hour. I'll post examples as soon as I print them.

Anyway, I'll be going to Brazil in a couple of weeks to visit my family, so hopefully I'll have a few good shots to share after that. It looks like the only film I'll take is Foma 100, so more examples are sure to come (hopefully portraits).

BTW, I printed a frame shot in Maco UP100 on both Forté Polygrade RC and Polywarmtone FB, and the warmtone paper seems to have an edge on contrast over the RC. The look, however, is much better on the FB so far.

When I print some Foma 100/510-Pyro on Warmtone FB I'll post the results.

Oh hell, in the name of common interest, here's the contact sheet. The shots were taken mostly to test the developing and guess focusing techniques.

Now, keep in mind that these were shot in an overcast day, while a slight drizzle was coming down. The light was amazingly even, so that I took one metering and kept it for all the shots (the 3 blown ones are shot against the clouds - although dense in the highlights, the negs show promisse). The fact that the frames came back as contrasty as they did should speak volumes for this developing technique/film combo. More tests are needed, of course, but so far so good!



Here's the complete info on the above negs: Foma 100 (e.i. 100) on 510-Pyro 1:500 for 60 minutes @72F (initial temp, no tempering bath). 30 secs initial agitation, 3 gentle inversions every 10 minutes. Camera was an agfa B2 Speedex with an 85mm uncoated triplet lens. Shots were f/5.6 at 1/50 or 1/25 (can't remember exactly). The contact sheet is printed on Forté Polygrade RC, souped in ID-78 with twice the sulfite (the scan seems a little warmer than the sheet in my hands).

Anyhow, sorry if I digressed. This developer of yours is great stuff, Jay.

Sorry for the typo, Jay. The 1:500 developing was 3 gentle inversions every 10 minutes. BTW, I posted a scan of the contact sheet as well.

As for the two actual shots, yeah, that's off my new (to me) Bronica S. Good stuff, man. I'm going to shoot the hell out of it in Brazil, hopefully. It doesn't look like I'll do any projects this time around, as I'll only be there for a week and a half. This time it will be Jay DeFehr style photography (hey, maybe I'll get to shoot some beautiful women as well)!

But my lucky bastardness doesn't end here. Oh, no, my friend. I'll be going to Japan in early april, to attend the museum reception. Mom and dad will tag along, so this will be one hell of a familiy trip. And more film will be shot, of course.

Oh, the bastard that I am.

Oh, yeah, this is a new batch of 510-Pyro. I mixed 1L of it, and its now my standard developer .

I agree. He's really onto something there. It gives me a far different tonality than my mainstay developer, Harvey's 777, but I've made one print from a negative developed in it that's amazing.

Not to mention its simplicity, convenience and keeping properties.
